| Furlong's throws 09:59 - Dec 28 with 834 views | cbower | 20 odd games in, probably 100+ 'long' throws and I can barely remember us winning the first contact let alone having a genuine chance as a result of one. His throws are decent but we just don’t seem able to win anything from them.Getting a real Jonas Knudsen vibe. | |

On Boxing Day, Millwall carried a threat from dead ball situations, even thought their long throw man was no better than Furlong. They had 2 tall centre backs who went up & these situations often put us under pressure for a period.

Agreed but when Furlong lobs it in there, we just don't seem to even challenge with any intent at all.

If anything Furlongs throws went further than the Millwall players long throw ins. The difference as you say was they seemed to have more 6ft plus players in the box.
| Furlong's throws on 11:41 - Dec 28 with 560 views | DJR | If we are going to pursue this, we need our tallest player nearest to the ball to at least try to flick it on, given Furlong doesn't throw it long enough for an attempt on goal. But making (as happened on Friday on at least one occasion) Azon the target ain't going to cut it. The other observation I would have in relation to both throws and corners is that we tend to be very static in the box. [Post edited 28 Dec 11:44]

Oh yes, the lack of movement is so frustrating. About the only player on the move is O'Shea. Same on all our throw ins - long or short) we just stand there. Oh, and near post crosses, there's rarely anyone try to come across their man. Azon tried to on Friday but a combination of a kn@b high cross from McAteer and Azon's lack of finishing skills saw the chance missed.

We are very reactive rather than proactive in the box. Possibly miss Greaves in there. Re the long throw, everybody is doing it this season but with mixed success. I reckon it will fizzle out as there are very few any where remotely near to Rory Delap's delivery. not surprising given Delap's javelin background.
| Furlong's throws on 14:08 - Dec 28 with 382 views | Nthsuffolkblue | Long throws have always been like this. Delap perfected the powerful head-height throw into the box and it was like a driven cross. That player at Cheltenham (or wherever it was) - Alfie May? - did it too. Others imitate it but end up with a looping throw that is far too easy to defend. Unless it is thrown in with pace it is probably just a waste. It would be interesting to see an analysis of the effectiveness of them (and how that correlates with the type of delivery) now they are back in vogue. | |

Ben Tozer. Alfie May is a midget.

| Furlong's throws on 15:00 - Dec 28 with 261 views | Blue_Uprising | Long throws are w*nk. They were w*nk when last in fashion and they are w*nk now. The faster people forget about this option the better. A 2 minute delay for absolutely nothing. In fact we could have a rule that anyone throwing the ball more than 5 meters gets a yellow card. 🤔 and if they wipe the ball on their shirts as well, they get a straight red. Yes they irrationally annoy me. | | | |

But in all seriousness why does it look like (for us and the opposition) that no one has actually practiced a long throw in training. Teams constantly overestimating how far the throw will go. Seemingly no one having much of an idea of where the ball will be aimed for. It’s like everyone turned up at a game in a park and someone just said “get in the box lads I’ve got a long throw” but turns out they mostly play 5 a side. No one in training said - “actually that long throw is toss. Let’s not use it in a real game”. See Cajuste’s alleged long throw last season.

They can be useful to cause a bit of panic but we just never seem to win that first contact and like you say, they do not look very well drilled in our case. Trajectory is most important. Just like floaty corners, the floaty long throw is wink!

I’ve always thought long throws were a bit of a waste of time for the reason you give. They just seem a good way of losing possession - with the odd exception. Poor old Knudson. The only thing I ever remember about his throw in was the opposition tootling up the other end and scoring! Though that might just be my rubbish memory.

The funniest part of this is that there really is no argument against it. "You know that long throw we tried and was totally rubbish? Shall we try it again?" "Yeah, why not? In training when we did it against the cones on the 5-a-side pitch it once worked."
