Cam H cameo 12:51 - Dec 31 with 1005 viewsUSA

So Cameron Humphreys got a few minutes at Coventry. I really thought when he first came into the 1st team he'd soon be a mainstay. Our progression has not been to his advantage which for him is a shame.

Anyway, back to that cameo. Was it a gesture from KMcK, one more appearance before he leaves in Jan? Will it be a loan or a permanent move? Or does he have any chance here in the 2nd half of the season?

IMO it was a gesture.

McKenna has previous for that kind of thing. Bringing the reserve GK on for 10 minutes in the last game of the season. The Harness and Edmundson cameos vs Man City, just before we loaned/sold them.

Before anyone says it yes I am comparing them, but it feels like a Pep/Foden situation. When Foden broke through he barely ever played and never went on loan. Now look at him.

I can see a loan this window purely because he's playing so little football, but I imagine he and McKenna won't be too upset to have kept him around the club for the first half of the season. I'd be surprised if we sell him, unless for really good money.

I was thinking that maybe we have to have a “home grown” player in the squad and for him to get time on the pitch.

Maybe that is just for Premiership teams.

If Bloomfield gets the Oxford job I suspect he will end up there in this window.

Appreciate you're not directly comparing them but Humphreys is 22 now, Foden probably had 100 appearances under his belt by then for City. If Humphreys was 19 or 20 fair enough, but he isn't a kid any more and needs to be playing regularly. It won't be with us and it doesn't look like being with us for the foreseeable. I think its in everyone's interests for him to move on.

You may have mis-read, I said I was absolutely comparing them!

I jest obviously. But you seem to see fewer and fewer players breaking through and playing that many games as a teenager these days, and careers go on for longer. Plenty of time for Humphreys.

In any case it's hard to judge what he could do when we haven't seen him play for so long. We've assembled a strong squad, maybe it's just politics?

Players definitely come through later now, I think its partly the money involved at the top when these clubs are having their pick from Europe and the rest of the world, its very difficult for a 16 / 17 year to cut through. The physicality of the game now is greater than before too, there's definitely a biological factor to it.

Humphreys issue here is it doesn't feel like a short term blocker for him and with strong reasons to believe next season will be much different. If we go up he's further from the side, if we don't he'll still have traffic ahead of him as we invest parachute money. I could only see him getting regular minutes if we didn't go up for a couple of years and started to stagnate at this level, even then its not guaranteed and that would be 2-3 years away which he can't wait around for.

Given he has already mooted the idea of him being loaned out, I suspect it was a gesture but we'll find out in the coming days.

If he gets 30 mins v Oxford I’d say it’s a change in sentiment, if he doesn’t I’d say a gesture and he’s out on loan Jan 2nd.

I presume McKenna kept Humphreys here as he would have been useful if we had an injury crisis. His contract expires next summer, with Town having a 1 year option. Maybe we will loan him out or sell him in January - he's wasting his time kicking his heels here when he's already shown he's well up to League 1 level.
