It was good, trouble is people on social media over analyse things so much and put a downer on things. It’s make belief at the end of the day, people forget it’s just TV. I’m not sure I believe I do think the Duffer brothers were probably torn on which ending to go with so gave us both so people can choose.

| Any Stranger Things fans? on 12:53 - Jan 2 with 909 views | Libero | I'm seeing very mixed reactions on my time line. I thought Season 4 was really poor, poor enough for me to not bother with season 5. It's a shame because the first season of the show was great, second was fine, but really it's just steadily gone downhill and the Duffer Brothers have never really had a clear vision of where they were going or what they were doing. | | | |
| Any Stranger Things fans? on 12:58 - Jan 2 with 886 views | iamatractorboy | I enjoy it on the whole, but the thing has become so overblown and stretched out so much it's become a bit of a bloated, poorly written and plotted mess to be honest. The production values are undoubtedly top notch but that isn't enough to make it essential viewing by any means. And the cheese factor is off the scale at times. It seems to have this weird contradiction of being both rather simplistic in its overall plot, and at the same time very confusing to follow. It seems clear to me they've been making it up as they go along for the past 2 or 3 series. Still watched it all though haha. | | | |
| Any Stranger Things fans? on 13:00 - Jan 2 with 866 views | Zx1988 | I enjoyed it, but the final episode felt as if it may have been the victim of a late re-write. The telegraphing of one or two big deaths at the end (Steve/Dustin and El/Hopper) didn't really come to fruition. Similarly, Who Wants To Live Forever by Queen never showed up at all, despite a Stranger Things version having been released on Streaming platforms. Still not a bad ending, but it very much feels like a safe ending from the Duffer Brothers. | |

Wasn’t that song used in a previous episode in a past series?

Technically, they've not known since season one! It was originally pitched as an anthology series, each season was supposed to be a different situation/scenario/bunch of kids/etc. Oh, how I wish they'd stuck with that. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Oh the 'plot armour' was off the scale for the past couple of series. And that just creates zero tension when you know a certain character (pick any of them, really) is not going to die when they are ostensibly in what should be a certain death scenario.

That may be one of the benefits of not having a social media presence. My wife and children have been updating me with all sorts of wacky theories!!!! I completely agree with your comment about it being make believe too. People need to chill a bit. For me it's been a few enjoyable hours of escapism. Oddly, we tried to watch it when it very first started. I quite liked it but my wife didn't at the time, so we dropped it. It wasn't until our son started raving about it a few years later that we went back to it and got into it. I'm glad we did.

I'd give series 5 a go Libs. I really enjoyed it mate. Other than Traitors and Call the midwife, there isn't much to watch in January!

Appreciate the effort, but I can confirm that I absolutely will not be doing so- four was unwatchable, I was surprised I finished it. I'm watching Fallout New Vegas, as it releases weekly - very strong start, although wish they'd just released it all at once like with the first season. I'm hoping to be working the release of the second season of Apple TV's 'Monarch Legecy of Monsters' next month and I've still a few episodes of the first season to finish, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. Also on Apple TV, Pluribus, which my partner is desperate to start, but we've just not found a suitable moment yet. Heard very good things about it, it's produced by Vince Gilligan who created Breaking Bad. [Post edited 2 Jan 13:16]

I didn’t start watching it until just before season 4 came out, managed to get the first 3 in in a few weeks. I don’t usually like sci-fi stuff but this felt different when I started watching it, a mixture of everything in it really. Went to the theatre show last year, that’s really good and well worth a visit.

I didn't realise that was the original premise. Would've been interesting to see that develop.

Ah. I was just about to post about the stage show. I haven't seen it but have heard good things, so cheers for confirming. Glad you enjoyed it. It's expensive but I think I'll put it on my 2026 to do list

Enjoyed it too. I was pretty much hooked from the opening credits in series one back in 2016, so I am glad that I stuck with it. Yes some of the plotting was a bit haphazard at times and it did become rather overblown the longer it went on - however I never felt it lost sight of those key themes; the power of friendship and imagination. And hell yes, I believe...

Season One has a viewers score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, however Season Five is rated at 56% - I think many continued watching due to the sunk time fallacy and almost a kind of 'brand loyalty' as the shows being going on for the best part of a decade- it might be better investing those hours elsewhere and watching something else. Have you watched Severance? It's pretty phenomenal. [Post edited 2 Jan 13:35]

*Mild spoilers follow* I feel like there were one or two missed opportunities. Linda Hamilton felt a little bit wasted. I mean, why get Nancy up as an obvious homage to Sarah Connor if you're not going to see those two properly face off? That said, I did enjoy it. A lot more than Series 4. [Post edited 2 Jan 13:33]

In fairness it is being review bombed - mostly by rampant homophobes who were aggressively surprised by a character's coming out, despite their sexuality being patently obvious from series one.

Is that right? - I'm familiar with the practise, there was massive review bombing for Star Wars Disney + show, The Acolyte- due to the leading cast all being people of colour and the show runner being a gay woman who's every word was under intense and unfair scrutiny. I hadn't heard of the review bomb for season five of Stranger Things and reactions from both fans and industry are very split, but fully believe it could be the case that it's been targeted. On a similar but different note, I did see a number of 'fans' upset because their ship of Will and Mike didn't come to fruition. [Post edited 2 Jan 13:51]

Indeed. Happened for the PlayStation game The Last Of Us Part II - an incredible experience even for an old gamer like me - where morons hated it because you play as a lesbian. I know art is subjective, but lots of people were outwardly complaining that a character was gay. So they gave it a measly review score

Aye, this stuff is more prevalent in gaming, but has bled over into TV and film - interesting you mention the last of us, I was discussing exactly this with Troy Baker from TLOU, last October in London. [Post edited 2 Jan 13:59]

Yeh that pees me off so much. There are plenty of things you can criticise the show about, but the ridiculous number of 1/10 scores on IMDB pretty clearly show there's a lot of homophobes out there. As pointed out, the same thing has happened to other shows and films when someone dares make a main character/hero deviate from the straight/white/male template the idiots have in their head as the default human being.
| Any Stranger Things fans? on 14:57 - Jan 2 with 423 views | WeirdFishes | I’d put S5 as the weakest of them all with a pretty underwhelming finale. For the whole season I don’t feel like anything overly surprising happened, maybe other than Will getting powers which were used maybe twice? It felt very different from the other seasons and just a bit flat to me. On the finale, I thought it was poor. So much plot armour and it was just far too easy for them to win. How can you have this super villain for them to be defeated with little struggle in about 5 minutes? It was all just very predictable with no shocking or emotional moments. I don’t take issue with anything that happened in the episode or how the story ended but I think they could have told it way better. I don’t think I believe - I can’t see her surviving and not seeing Mike/Hopper. | |
