| Azon & Akpom - The Nearly Men 10:07 - Jan 11 with 3327 views | BseaBlue | When I watch both of them, it seems as though they suffer with that final bit of joy in the right moments. They will get their touch slightly wrong in a good area or they miss a decent chance because they cant quite get their body shape right. In the first half yesterday, Philogene was all on his own inside the box and Akpom's pass goes behind him. Macateer puts a great cross in and Azon cant quite just get his foot to it to steer it in. Is it a lack of sharpness? Lack of composure maybe? It is frustrating because you watch both and they do get in to good areas and I'd like to think they look like they have a bit about them but ultimately, it cant just be bad luck can it. | | | | |

| Azon & Akpom - The Nearly Men on 10:15 - Jan 12 by JammyDodgerrr | Azon is only 22, remember. I think he's got enough about him to show that he would come good. Akpom, there is less belief. |
Azon works hard and shows real enthusiasm, but I'm not convinced. I'm sorry but Akpom isn't working out for me, right now. I sincerely hope I'm proven wrong in both cases and will gladly chow down on 'Umble Pie, if proven so!

| Azon & Akpom - The Nearly Men on 08:33 - Jan 12 by Vic | Some of you are old enough to remember Mich D'Avrey and Robin Turner. Akpom and Azon emind ne of these two - ok squad members to hold the fort for a cpuple of matches whilst the main man was out injured, but not really good enough for a regular place in the team. |
Great post. Yes, sadly I am old enough to remember those two. I think they got a lot of unfair stick as the Town were coming towards the end of a ridiculous period and being compared to legends like Mariner, Gates, Butcher, Mills etc. Mich D'Avray got similar levels of criticism to what I see McAteer receiving now. My recollection is that he was technically limited and certainly not a prolific scorer but a pretty effective target man (very strong in the air).

| Azon & Akpom - The Nearly Men on 10:34 - Jan 12 by BseaBlue | A fair point but still a loan player, so unless there was a stipulation to buy, surely he was signed as a player to help the first team now rather than being a project. |
Agreed. People can use the "excuse" that he's young but ultimately, he's not our player, he's come here to play and help us now. If he was our player and hes on a 3 or 4 year contract, then fine, we need to make sure he reaches his potential. He's not going to do that this season. And as other have said, I want him to bang loads of goals in (obviously!) but I just can't see that happen. He works hard etc but sometimes that's not enough for a team at the top end of the table. I don't think he'd be starting in many top half teams in the table, lets put it that way.

As with Azon I think we have the same situation with Szmodics, he works really hard bit no end product. When you consider that if you take Clarke and Philogene they have scored more between them than Hirst,Azon, Akpom,Szmodics,Egeli and McAteer put together. Any injuries of those two or teams set up to stop either one of them and we are struggling. I think the fact that we had over 30 shots at goal against Blackpool and one out of the two goals we did get was scored by a defender says it all. Added to that hardly anything in the way of goals comes from midfield. Can't we give Warky a few games.
| Azon & Akpom - The Nearly Men on 17:10 - Jan 12 with 184 views | PrideOfTheEast | Azon played well at Coventry but he isn't a goalscorer. He was very poor when he came on this weekend and generally I'm not convinced. Far too often he falls over, looks for things he isn't going to get and allows for a transition that better teams would punish. Akpom played alright against Oxford and looks a better bet for the next few months for me. | | | |
