If Reform are to be taken seriously as a potential party of government (whether you like it or not) they need a few more heavyweights as they are something of a 1 man band. Zahawi, as an experienced former Minister, fits that bill and as an ethnic minority, will help present Reform as non-racist.

It does show the tightrope they've got to walk, adding enough experience to look credible whilst maintaining their desired image as an anti-establishment party.
