Their keeper had 5 saves to make. Walton had none. Could it be, whilst we all notice how many games we aren't scoring as heavily as we think we should, the real story is how tight our defence has become? Also 3 goals scored is hardly deficient - we just know it could have been 5 or 6. Last time at home v Blackburn the result was 4-3 which might be more exciting, but was typical that season that we conceded one or two before bouncing back. If we keep this tight at the back for the rest of the season then so what if we keep winning by 'only' one or two. Wins are wins.

We're definitely improved but let our intensity drop after the first 30 minutes or so and didn't have enough control as a result. A few occasions when a well hit shot, or lucky deflection, or indeed a penalty, might have made it 2-1 and seen a nervy finish.

Interesting we’ve only conceded more than once in 5 games this season and only twice in the last 17 since the Charlton game. Keeping the opposition to 0s and 1s gives a really strong platform

In 23-24 Hirst and Moore only had 14 goals between them in the league in about 3,000 mins, so approx 1 goal every 2.4 games. However we conceded 1.2 goals per game. This season Hirst and Azon have 8 goals between them in the league in about 2,700 mins, so approx 1 goal every 2.7 games. We are now only conceding 0.9 goals per game. What does this tell us? Who knows, but was fun looking at the numbers - and it is rare that a team averaging less than one goal conceded per game while scoring more than 1.5 goal per game is not promoted. I think the last one to miss out was probably Leeds in 24. [Post edited 19 Jan 11:02]

For the first 15 minutes of the second half the whole game was a mess, so many misplaced passed from both teams. They clearly wanted to make the game more chaotic, and we got sucked into it. On the defence point though, I look at the longer term trend rather than individual ganes, and we are very clearly a much tougher team to score against than we have been for a long time. Walton has had a number of games where he has barely had a save to make.

A team hardly ever controls a game for the whole 90 mins, and I always think a measure of a team is how it responds when being put under more pressure. The simple truth is we are not conceding the same goals we did in 23-24 and as such we are a better team under pressure this season than for the last few seasons. Our intensity dropped by most likely because we had to make an unplanned change with Philogene going off and Clarke coming on - it is unusual we make a single player change to our midfield formation, usually come in 2s or 3s so that impacted the flow and shape. Was noticable that after the "scheduled" changes the team settled down and got control again. Not as good as we could be, but certainly improving. [Post edited 19 Jan 11:09]

Even in the early season where we were conceding more, it seemed that we were conceding from the few chances that the oppo had.... our xG against is by far the lowest in the champ ( 23.8 vs 27.5 for Middlesborough as the next best). I know a lot of people don't like xG, but it does give some good ideas of trends... looking at the current data, its clear that Cov and Town are clear of the rest in terms of creating and conceding chances... of the rest of the top 6, middlesborough are right up there, but the rest are all clearly overperforming against at least one xG metric. And that's the feeling you get, the playoff picture is constantly changing, but I don't think anyone below the current top3 is going to challenge for top 2... and if we continue to either play the way we have, or improve a small percentage, we should be nailed on for top 2.

Yes, a side with a greater attacking threat could/should have made more of that weaker spell in the game. Bristol City will be a much more serious challenge in that respect. A potentially difficult game but one that can be a useful guide to how this side has progressed. There is an assumption that this team can go up a gear but it may be that we don't reach our potential this season. Hopefully, a couple of strong signings can take us up a level and that includes reducing the spells in games where we become careless, over commit players forward and seemingly lose concentration.

SO a shot isn't on target if it gets blocked by a defender? That seems a bit odd.
