I'm sure I've told this story before...
Around 1990, so pre smartphones, I was with a group of mates, in a pub in Cheltenham. There was an old fella, sitting alone in the corner, who looked like he had fallen on hard times.
At some point, I came out of the toilet and my mates were chatting with the old man. They called me over and informed me that his name was John Robertson and that he'd played for Ipswich, after the war. Obviously I was obliged to buy the legend a few pints and treat him to fish and chips.
It was only later that they told me it was all a wind up, planned with the fella, to get me to buy him a pint. Oh how we all chuckled at my naivety. | |

Big Mick, quite a few interactions with him over the years including a massive donation to children in Need, a card when our kids were born and when I was best man at a wedding he recorded a team talk for my speech which included puns on every single player in the Town squad. He even improved the script I wrote for him 😂 “Skuse me if I come across rude but it must be said that Huws must know what your doing in the bed Chambers etc”. His wife Fiona was also really nice.
Boncho Guetnchev once invited my mate in for pizza with his family when he was kicking a ball around in the street at wincanton gardens, which must get a special mention, but would now be frowned on I suppose. |  | | |

Sir Alf.
Shared a train compartment with him from Liverpool Street to Ipswich one day when I was about 15. He was a charming and astute gentleman, attentive and full of interesting observations. His favourite words were "most certainly," which were added to the majority of his comments! His voice was distinctively posh, with just the occasional 'Dagenham' inflection.
Also met him on a few other occasions, not least when he was on turnstile duty to cover an absentee on a freezing, snow-flurried, freezing, winter Saturday afternoon in the 1960s. | | | |
