Match of the Day was very different in 1982 13:51 - Jan 26 with 858 viewsIllinoisblue

Wasting time on YouTube last night and stumbled across MOTD from 1982. Fascinating stuff:

They led with Oldham v Sheff Wednesday from Division 2 as the main game. Imagine that now instead of all prem all the time. Camera pans to the Oldham dugout where the manager Jimmy Frizzell is smoking a cigarette.

Players wearing 1 - 11. One sub only, wearing 12.

The style of play… get it wide or get it forward. That was it. The very idea of going sideways or backwards… nope, not happening. Launch it in the box and see what happens.

Wednesday scored first, and at least two fans were chucking toilet rolls in celebration. Did they bring them with, or steal from the toilets?

Later, the Wednesday fans, 3-0 up at this point, are singing You’ll Never Walk Alone. Proof that while it’s a Liverpool (and Celtic) song it wasn’t always exclusively so.

Second game on was us at Arsenal. We were 1-0 down when I fell asleep. Maybe we came back?

Was that the Oldham game that Wednesday fans rioted? Jack Charlton had to get on the tannoy to try and calm things down.

They had secured promotion that day too.

Edit. That was two years before that apparently.

I saw that the ITV4 Big Match Revisited has just started a new series of the 1971/1972 season. I think that's the earliest season they've done so far. Hopefully there will be some Ipswich matches shown in episodes soon.

It's funny they showed a Leeds v Man City match and were saying the referees this season were coming down hard on foul play. Ref gave out 4 yellows for what would be easily 4 straight reds today.

Yes it was before and Motson made a vague reference to it in his intro, something about Jack Charlton leaving the pitch here last time with tears in his eyes after a pitch invasion.

"The style of play… get it wide or get it forward. That was it. The very idea of going sideways or backwards… nope, not happening. Launch it in the box and see what happens."

Better than the tippy tappy between the keeper, backline and the defensive midfielders we have today in my humble opinion.

" Later, the Wednesday fans, 3-0 up at this point, are singing You’ll Never Walk Alone. Proof that while it’s a Liverpool (and Celtic) song it wasn’t always exclusively so."

We were also known to sing it back in the day.

Looking it up, we lost 1-0. I was at the game, but I don’t remember it tbh. The 82/3 game was played in 83 and was 2-2.

Laurie Sivell was in goal. We were in white and black. Stewart Robson scored the goal after a mixup between Sivell and Steve McCall. Scored at the Clock End. Couldn’t tell how many town fans were in the corner as they didn’t pan that far over.

I was there the season Sivell "threw" the ball into our net. That was up The Clock End but I was watching from the North Bank. There was no segregation then and I think we figured the North Bank would be better, as it had a roof.
I would guess around 1971 or 1972?

Around the 94th minute vs Barnsley at Wembley 2000, all 4 corners of Wembley were singing YNWA.

Mental when you think about it.
