Trump:”These people were brought to our country to vote, and they vote illegally. The Republicans should say, we should take over the voting in at least 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting.” Oh and this of course in Georgia [Post edited 2 Feb 21:11]

The question is whether the measure is proportionate to the problem, and in this case it does not appear to be so. The number of convictions for personation in the last decade is in the low double digits, whereas the requirement for voter ID is resulting in over 10,000 people being turned away at polling stations each year.

In US each state sets its electoral rules, hence attempts at gerrymandering. Some states elect a Senator on a first past the post system while others require 50% +1 to be elected. Failure to achieve that results in a run off between the top two. Currently the two parties system doesn’t often results in a run off but there was one in Georgia in 2022.

| The end of free and fair elections in the USA on 08:14 - Feb 3 by TownieRob | If the US want fair democracy, a great place to start would be having the same everywhere, that includes photo ID to actually vote. |
IN THEORY, this would be ok, IF everyone was provided with the applicable ID. I've seen fears expressed that a lot of women will be disenfranchised, for example, if their current (eg married) name doesn't match their birth certificate. I'm sure there will be other examples. And you can bet your bottom dollar the Republicans/MAGA have done plenty of analysis into the demographics around likelihood of having allowable ID, how easy it will be for persons to obtain it, etc. They certainly wouldn't be howling for this if their supporters were less likely to fall into those categories.

It doesn't solve the problem. Have you thought about the alternative problems it creates? I agree that anything that improves the fairness of elections is to be applauded. However, it would need to be a clear improvement which I am not sure requiring photo ID does. That said, I am not strongly opposed to it.
