Kieran clearly made a decision early doors that he wouldn't play SS in a striker role.
Having made that decision, it seems to me that to replace SS with Mehmeti was a reasonable decision in terms of personnel (age, fact that SS has not been a big success for us so far, injury record). What was less than ideal was letting him go on loan rather than for a decent fee, but we don't know what loan fee might have been realised.
If you want to assess Kieran's initial decision as stupidity, not to play him up front, you can make that case. But I think having made that decision, letting him go now was not controversial really. He hasn't lived up to expectations, and Mehmeti has more chance of being an important player for us in years to come (in our system), or to increase his value, or both.
I am amongst those who finds it very frustrating that we didn't add a striker, and that we have worse striking options than Norwich, but I'm not sure the board needs me or anyone else to say that again too many times. |  | | |

Interesting that you've called me a numpty when you've spent 18 months failing to realise that we have not and would not use Szmodics as a striker. Letting Szmodics go weakens our striking options about as much as letting Harry Clarke go did. | |

Yep. We should have just added goals by bringing in Mehmeti as well. So we've got two of the top scoring wingers, one of the highest scoring no. 10s*. Mehmeti's already got 8 from open play, which is the same as Clarke has (he's also got 4 pens of course).
Logically, we're fine. But then I can understand why people bang their heads against the wall when our CFs are missing from 2 yards out!
*Mehmeti might actually be the highest scoring natural 10; I'm not sure, as there are some players above him like Burrell at QPR who's main position I'm not clear on. Most of the other non-striker top scorers are wingers. | |
