Kieran at 9am, Jack Taylor after that.

Ashton drip-feeding to the EADT that "numerous strikers were put to McKenna by the recruitment team, but Kieran rejected them". That was a big red flag, for me.

I'm hoping there's not an internal power struggle going on. I know clubs need to ensure they are future-proofing themselves and ensuring we recruit well post-McKenna, but Kieran surely has credit in the bank to pick players that fit his system?!

I think that suggests he is though, as the list was put to him and we didn't end up with any of them. Implies he is ultimately getting the last say.

Egeli was similar, remember at the time he was put to McKenna weeks before we signed him and KM came out with something along the lines of 'I took my time to decide if its a deal we should do'.

Wouldn't that be out of the frying pan and into the fire ?

After Rodgers, Amorim, Maresca and Glassner this season it seems that the dissatisfaction of managers/head coaches is out in the open and part of any press conference is a reminder to the owners that to get results on the pitch the manager/ head coach needs some control over the squad.

Trouble is that's the world they operate in now. You either get on the bus or you don't get those jobs.

Aargh, you're pushing me into over extending the analogy now...There are some people who get on the bus and put on their headphones, stare out the window when the person next to them tries to start a conversation and others who are happy to swap ideas and consider what leads to their differences of opinions. Ashton and McKenna are in the latter camp surely ?

As an outsider I've always thought they have a good relationship, working wise and personal. Its hard to fake a relationship in the public eye and the evidence suggests theirs is genuine and collaborative. Right from PR, the training ground project, recruitment, McKenna's own decisions on his future etc. They'll have different opinions and motives at times, Ashton needs to manage up as well as down and no doubt there's a bit of healthy tension on occasions but my guess is they speak regularly and are pretty much on the same page.

Ashton's beefed up the recruitment team, whether McKenna is delighted with their impact who knows, but I get the impression KM is still green lighting signings and picking his team free from wider influence. I don't think he would be here if that wasn't the case.

Good reply and I feel ashamed for using it to add to the analogy with Smozdics (self describing as a lunatic) as the one on the upstairs front seat, halfway through a six-pack of Tennants and shouting out the window at passers by who everyone (even Núñez) has moved two seats away from.

When I read the EADT piece, my first reaction was that McKenna had maybe put his foot down and effectively said 'no thanks' to what he’d been offered in terms of players.

It feels like we’ve signed a lot of projects or profiles recently, and perhaps he’s reached the point of saying he needs players who can improve the team here and now, not ones who might come good in a year or two. So instead, he’s decided to go with what he has available and back the group he trusts.

That might be me reading too much into it, but that was definitely my first take...

I think with these things there's generally a tipping point in the formula. If Szmodics was on 15 goals for the season does he leave for Derby on loan? Certainly not. If you're getting what you need you probably hold your nose, the same works for managers. Listened recently to Simon Jordan admitting he really didn't like Ian Dowie and he was super awkward to work with, but while they were getting results and getting them promoted he could turn a blind eye. Guess there's been tons of players in the past like that, 'bad eggs' but doing well so you just crack on and try to manage it. When their negative influence starts to outweigh their contribution on the pitch its curtains. Can't help but feel Szmodics has gone in opposing ways on those spectrums to the point where he's not worth the hassle.

Yep, exactly as I felt.

Really need to enjoy him whilst we’ve got him still because it’s going to be a sad day when he goes.

Unless like Brentford or Brighton or Palace (until now) we find we get an equivalent or better replacement.

McKenna is good, but I don't subscribe to the view that he is irreplaceable. There are other managers as good and better than him - we just need our people to identify them.

Wasn't it once rumoured that there had been a falling out between Szmodics and McAteer?

Unfortunately the good as and better than him, Carrick, has gone and landed the job McKenna wanted. In a way that works out for us as it blocks McKenna from wanting away...unless things don't work out at Old Trafford in the remainder of the season.

Although, once Man U had decided that the big names weren't immediately available, they went for someone who was both immediately available and a past fans' favourite. If he continues to do well they may have backed themselves into a corner as with Solskjær. Not sure they'd really want him or McKenna, neither of whom have proved anything on the big managerial stage.
