Does Greaves deserve to stay at left-back … 09:24 - Feb 26 with 1891 viewsringwoodblue

even when Davis is fit again?

I’m pretty confident McK will bring Leif back asap but just interested in others thoughts.

Poll: After 20 games where will Town be in the table?

We were much more solid against Watford. Think we may see Greaves utilised more often away from home, Davies a shoe in at PR.

Yes I think this is a good take. Davis is the only out and out left back who's fit, and he's had a big workload. Our home form is really decent. Our away form could do with shoring up, and it's worth considering whether it's no coincidence that we've performed well away from home with Greaves at LB. It may be a very easy observation to make, and it may well not be that simple. But we did look relatively unthreatened against Watford, and we all know that for all of Davis' quality, the defensive side of his game is not as strong as the offensive.

So yeah, I think Greaves may well get more minutes away from home, as part of the solution to our away form, and to manage Davis' workload. Also keeps Greaves fit in case we need him at CB towards the back end of the season. Also may help keep Greaves' morale up, as a former star Champ CB with a big price tag, who must be a little disappointed not to have played more.

Just a thought, would Davis be good as a DM with Greaves at LB?

We did get done 3-1 by Sheffield United with Greaves at left back. It's not all been peaches and cream. You can tell he's not a natural in that position although he's done pretty well there on the whole when needed.

Indeed. I think it has alternated between looking very good an very poor when Greaves has played there. How much that is down to opposition is another question.

I think this thread is a nice example of how people tend to overreact to individual performances and results, whether those are team or individual performances. Leif has been one of our best, arguably our best, players over the last 3-4 years and people are suggesting we drop him for a CB who has generally underperformed here off the back of a good game away at Watford.

Isn't it great to have two such capable players for the LB spot.

In answer to your question - yes he deserves to, but that slot belongs to Leif so he won't. (And rightly so)

Yes I agree that it's important not to overreact. On the whole, I have not been a massive advocate for Greaves (although I appreciate that one should not hold his transfer fee against him), and I certainly don't think that Leif should suddenly be out of fashion just because Greaves had a good game.

And of course you make a very fair point about the Sheff Utd game, which was not a comfortable experience.

However, I do think that Greaves might get more minutes at LB towards the end of the season, especially if Leif's fitness and workload need to be managed.

Quite straightforward really....Greaves is the better defender, Davis the better attacker.

The choice is KMc's.

Yep, toss of a coin, but JG should get even better at the attacking side with more games. However as some suggest, I think LD is one of the few almost undroppables when 100% fit, as far as KM is concerned. Should never be such a thing in my opinion, but there you go.
