But why should the foxes, mice, rats, crows and hawks miss out on dinner? Seems to be a bit of prejudice going on there to me.

Yer 6000 years to young, a similar practice of excarnation was carried out in the UK during the neolithic

I've always fancied that, followed by the bones being put into some kind of barrow* on a hilltop.
