Out of all the changes that McKenna made, bringing Egeli into the side seems the strangest, and arguably it wasn't a good call because he wasn't very effective again.

What's the general consensus on him? I don't want to be too critical of him. I made that mistake with criticising Philogene's lack of perceived effort after the home game against Spurs last season, and he has turned out to be somewhat of a revelation this season, so I don't want to go down that same road again.

It has been mentioned before about Egeli always cutting in on his left and not wanting to take players on down the outside, which is too predictable for defenders. He also doesn't seem to me as hungry and willing to get stuck in as some of the others.

Not all his fault. He showed a brilliant piece of skill to control a ball from about 2-3 metres away which was hammered at him, and he somehow managed to control it and stop it going out for a throw. He also showed he can get stuck in when he puts his mind to it when he wiped out one of their players just before half time.

I think it's a confidence thing. I could be imagining things, but other players seem to me to be reluctant at times to give him the ball when he has got into good positions. Far more likely to give it to Clarke or Davis down the left. Maybe they think that those players are more likely to do some damage which would be a bit understandable to be honest.

Example was at home to Swansea when Mehmeti shot from the edge of the area when he could have passed to Egeli who was in a much better position.

Clearly Egeli is a very talented player and will come good. But is it too much of a risk for him to be starting games right now, considering his current lack of impact and the massive importance of getting 3 points as often as we can. Not sure we can afford to carry him as a passenger at this stage of the season.

Thoughts?

Valid post IMO. I don't think calling a spade a spade should be perceived as being negative. He's young, he needs time, he has a huge monkey on his back in terms of the transfer fee and there aren't many 19 year olds playing the minutes he is for a top team in one of Europe's toughest leagues. People need to be patient with him.

I think all that is true, equally I don't think he's given us a huge amount of output in that role for a long while now, I'm not convinced he's suited to it stylistically and I'm not sure of the value he's bringing there for the most part tbh.

Personally I'd rather McAteer gets more opportunities when rotating Burns, but ultimately McKenna is the one who works with the squad every day and in him I trust.

When he playing on the right, I think he is going to be compared with Omari too who was an absolute revelation and arguably the best player in the Championship by this point in 23/24. I know circumstances are different in some ways (from abroad, new country, needs time to etc) but I don't think it's an unfair comparison to make when you've ultimately spent virtually the same fee on him as we did Omari. To my eye he has actually regressed rather than improve as the season has gone on. I actually wonder if he could ultimately end up being a 9.

I'm not sure spending £18m on a project given where we are and what we're trying to achieve is good business.

He clearly needs time, and given the reported interest in him at the time, there's obviously a player in there, but when you're a club recently relegated, trying to navigate a notoriously tough league, I just think it wasn't the right time to spend that money on that profile of player.

But that's me, for all I've said, he could bang next season and go for £40m for all I know.

Yep agree. Clearly played a lot of football, possibly more than they thought he would. He does make an impact though which is probably a good sign for the future.

He makes an impact? Does he? I know he scored last week, but ( sorry) it was a bit of a fortunate, bobbly finish. No problem about that, but he doesn't really make an impact. No injection of pace, physicality, skills, etc.... its basically (1)receive the ball on the right, stop , turn and pass it sideways or backwards OR (2) stop, step inside and hit a speculative floaty deep cross into the area ( usually easily headed away).
I'd love it if he put in a 10-15 min cameo once in a while where he could showcase some skills. If he's getting minutes under his belt means he's getting an education then great, but it's a bit tenuous. He needs to be doing a bit more.

I feel he has a really great future ahead of him

But in our rightside position its nothing at all like hes played as a youngster. Hes spending far to much time facing our own fullback on halfway.

Hes also stopped playing the worldy cross field pass or the looped ball over the top. He looks scared. The burst of acceleration spoken of on his football profile hasn't been shown and he rarely makes an outfield run.

Its not his fault but I feel he really hurts us when he plays. Yes I know he scored and thats not hurting us recently. But there are still many minutes around a goal.

For me. Playing egeli is like playing sammy s and akpom in our 10 role... it just does not work as it doesnt suit the player.

I dont know why we keep persisting with it because hes not getting better. Id say hes gradually got worse and is one of the easiest players to get the ball from.

That being said. As an individual I think he will have a cracking future but I do think we should have sent him out on loan and then re look at it in the future. A very expensive purchase based on potentjal. One as a prem club you wouldnt even blink at. But as a champ club its a massive amount and he doesn't show anything close to the value we purchased so it therefore becomes imo a massive waste of summer funds.

But there is a future ahead and if we get promoted I expect him to be back in the championship on loan but in a role that suits.

He is a passenger, he's very very predictable cuts in a dream to mark,
Not much pace,
Tracks back but then loses his man again,
Big step coming here in club that has ambitions,
Heavy price tag probably not helping,
If we go up it will become more difficult,
I'd imagine a championship loan,
The league he came from isn't no where near the competitiveness as the championship massive step,
I'm sure there must be a long term plan for him but it certainly isn't wide right when we have burns or mcateer and he ATM shouldn't be Infront of mcateer burns speaks for himself,
The lad is going to have to dig in and be treated with kid gloves,
A lot of young players easily get ruined he dosent deserve this,
