| With VAR … on 23:18 - Mar 10 by SuffolkPunchFC | The point still stands, whether you like it or loath it, VAR would have likely given the deserved result tonight. It may have its faults, but with improvements VAR could have a positive impact on the game, as it has in cricket and rugby. It does raise the question though about why so many people are incensed about those decisions tonight. If you accept it’s part of the game, then accept the official's mistake with grace. Otherwise the alternative is acceptance that some form of review process is necessary. People can’t have it both ways. |
The issue is the constant soft fouls and penalties being given, for me anyway. I don't understand, and haven't for a long time, why football is so happy to see games decided by an unchallenged kick from 12 yards. So often the punishment doesn't fit the crime. And the stupid thing is, on the contrary we're always looking for any possible reason to disallow goals from open play. In a way I'm more outraged by tonight's penalty than Saturday's non penalty, because to give a decision that is statistically likely to be a goal 80% of the time in the last minute of the game, you should be absolutely sure and it should be pretty clear cut (and also for reasons mentioned above). How is it referees are so easily convinced by diving like tonight? But to contradict the above, Saturday's decision was a particularly insane decision. By the way, VAR can get in the bin. Hated it from the start and it's panned out as badly as I expected. There is an element of having to put up with poor decisions, but not when it's just rewarding diving. [Post edited 11 Mar 0:13]

I hate var. But I actually think it might have overuled the pen today. It is so obviously a poor decision. Ref was guessing. Which is unacceptable.

I think he got wrapped up the entertaining nature of the game and the drama of the second half, and thought he'd add to it. He saw a coming together and a man in red fall over, and jumped at the chance to make a headline.
