| To late to resolve or something we have to live with 21:54 - Mar 14 with 1185 views | FrimleyBlue | Oshea commenting on again a rather poor first half as we struggle to adapt to a side not playing how we anticipate. People talk of over coaching... now not saying it is as ive always seen all coaches make you watch videos etc prior to games. But...... with us seemingly having this issue. Is it something we carry on with and just habe to navigate but hope we have better 2nd periods. Or should we begin looking at ourselves more and less concentration on what other clubs have done before us.. Days looks like is fine as got the result.. but as we've seen the last two games it can also be costly. Just seems a tricky thing to deal with through 9 games. | |

All clubs do a similar level of opposition analysis, it’s just a bit of a cop out for a sub standard 1st half performance. We lacked intensity in the first half today IMO and that’s not on the opposition. I thought we were very milky, no real tempo, pedestrian, laboured, and struggled to play through a narrow Wednesday side and congested central areas. For all of Azor and Neil’s strengths we didn’t have that creativity and guile centrally especially with Mehmeti being a bit off colour and generally not afforded and time or space on the ball. We struggled to stretch the pitch and move Wednesday out of shape as we lacked any natural wide threat going forward, which was more a personnel issue with 2 wide men who like to come inside, a defensively minded right back and right footed left back. Didn’t work at all, which KM addressed at half time with the introduction of Burns. Davis or a more natural, left footed replacement is a challenge. Johnson did really well on balance, but he’s ultimately not a natural left back and doesn’t have the pace to overlap like Davis does and create the space for those around him. I think Greaves comes in there for Brum with Kipre back, but needs must today and probably next weekend I’d guess.

I think the first 10 minutes we found the spaces and had a decent tempo but like lots of the games against low block teams the opposition then adjusted their block a bit - we then struggled to find a way through and the tempo dropped. When that happens I think we become a bit more reliant on a dribbler breaking the lines and neither Clarke nor Mehmeti had much luck with that first half.

He clearly didn’t watch that first half mess against Stoke Reserves let alone the utter garbage I witnessed far too often during Evans’ time. The stats and my eyes tell me we controlled the ball and the game ok most of the time. I agree with you - first chunk of the second half we laboured and got a bit ‘stuck’. Breaking open a ten man defence is something we struggle with. You can’t really deploy pace because there’s nowhere to go. It’s hard to pass through. Maybe if we had a battering ram CF like Moore it might have helped, but we don’t and we don’t play that way anyway. We just have to keep doing our passing game and wait for the opportunity - which we did and took straight after the one on one. It’s easy to say Wednesday are cr@p and we should just pile through them. But while limited, they were very well organised and gave it a go. They had a few old heads out there in addition to yoofs and they weren’t the worst team I’ve ever seen. They don’t lose games by boatloads by and large and you can see why. We got the job done. The game won’t live long in the memory, but if I do think back to the days when we had a really outstanding side under Robson there were plenty of games of struggle and sometimes worse. It’s how it is. Looking forward to next week. It’ll be interesting to see how they approach it. Will they go for it or will they do Hull massed defence? |
He was doing co-commentary at Stoke and often jokes about how rarely he has seen us win on northern awaydays which he tends to cover. Maybe his comments were a bit hyperbolic but we were playing a team that has only won once this season. [Post edited 15 Mar 11:38]

I think at 0-0 there's definitely an element about that. We do try to pass/dribble through the lines but there's always an element of caution there. I don't necessarily disagree with this as an approach - if Wednesday had scored on the break it would have been even more difficult to break down the block as they would have to take even fewer chances going forward. Despite the lethargic feel to the first half we still created a few decent chances - if one of Mehmeti/Hirst/Neil (then Walle Egeli)/Furlong's chances had gone in it would have had a very different feel to it.

And is pretty competitive and resolute with regard not being tonked, whilst being totally hopeless in attack. We won, like most other teams this season, but it wasn't easy and from McKenna's comments sounds like same can be said for most. Mathie talks nonsense most of the time, and also gives very little insight. I love him obviously, but he's a poor pundit and commentator. Worst performance in ten years?! Arf!!

Since we played them in December, they’ve lost 3-0 to QPR and Preston and got battered 4-0 at Swansea. The other 14 games when they’ve lost it’s been by no more than two goals. They’ve clearly improved a little second half of the season and are not getting blown away as easily. Our aggregate score over the two games is 5-1. I wish it was 10-1 but things are rarely that easy and I think we’ve done alright in those games. Nothing special, but job done.

Absolutely, the result is all that matters but I can't say it's been much fun during the majority of away games this season. [Post edited 15 Mar 11:42]
