Mrs Swanners has a birthday coming up and I’m struggling. Different things I know, but she likes both hot chocolate and coffee. Argh!

Thanks. The only doubt I’ve got with going down the coffee machine route is that we’re already perfectly happy with our various cafetières and stove top espresso makers. Whereas we don’t have anything that makes a decent hot chocolate. A milk frother on a coffee machine would obviously do that, but it’s a lot of extra money and worktop space just for the hot chocolate. Actually, this has really helped. Just by thinking about it a bit more I think a velvetiser would be more useful for us. Thanks!

If you do want that though I’d recommend Dualit, it’s basically what a lot of the expensive branded ones are based off (and Dualit IP) at a fraction of the price of some. Coffee wise I’ve got a De Longhi La Specialista bean to cup machine. At c.£400 it wasn’t cheap, but I must say it’s superb. I rarely buy a coffee out now, because this is just as good as cafe quality (with the right beans) and I feel like I’m justifying the payback a bit that way.

I own an Espresso machine, but it is incredibly pricey (so much so, that I'm not going to link to it as I'm embarrassed about it!). But I will say that it is 100% my favourite bit of kitchen equipment, and it will have paid for itself over the years. The hot chocolate it makes is also out of this world. Bottom line is, you can't scrimp on an Espresso machine, or you might as well stick with your stove top. So it comes down to... how much do you love your wife? [Post edited 29 Mar 23:47]

If you're already happy with the coffee making, just get one of those, the bean to cup machines don't do anything better than having the grinder and milk frother separate - and they're easier to clean when not all in one | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| More hive mind please on 08:07 - Mar 30 with 234 views | catch74 | I bought my wife a Hotel Chocolate velvetiser a few years ago (thankfully requested as a present .) It really does nothing, barely warms the milk or froths it. Was used a few times and just sits there now. Looking at versions now they look completely different and maybe far more effective but on our experience I’d say stay away. Luckily we have our pub next door with a very nice coffee machine, so the frother on that is to hand. | |
