Question 07:01 - Apr 16 with 998 viewsMJallday

If two teams (say ITFC and Southampton) finish on same points
Then it goes to goal difference

What happens if ifs the same goal difference ?

Does it go to goals scored, home or away wins, alphabetical?

Just wondering

Goal Difference: The number of goals scored minus the number of goals conceded.

Goals Scored: If goal difference is identical, the team that scored more total goals in league matches is ranked higher.

Head-to-Head Record: If still tied, the record of matches played between the clubs (points gained, then goal difference, then goals scored in those specific matches) is used.

Play-off Match: If a promotion, relegation, or play-off place is at stake and all above criteria are equal, a neutral-venue play-off may be arranged (though this is extremely rare).

The play-off match seems an unnecessary expense to me and also a huge disadvantage to the losing side which then has to go through the regular play-offs.

I'm not saying they should do something random like flip a coin or do rock-paper-scissors, but a round of crazy golf would probably be the fairest way to separate the two sides. Obviously at a neutral venue.

According to Google AI if goals scored is also equal, these are the next criteria:

Head-to-Head Results: The teams are ranked based on the points they gained in the matches played against each other during the season.

Head-to-Head Goal Difference: If head-to-head points are equal, the goal difference from only those specific matches is used.

Head-to-Head Goals Scored: If still tied, the team that scored more goals in those head-to-head matches is ranked higher.

Head-to-Head Away Goals: The team with more goals scored as the visiting side in their head-to-head matches takes precedence.

Total Wins: Should they still be tied, the team with the highest number of wins across the entire season is ranked higher.

Away Goals Scored (Season): The total number of goals scored away from home throughout the full season is considered.

Disciplinary Record: The team with the fewest "penalty points" (based on yellow and red cards) is given the higher position.

The Ultimate Decider
If the teams are still exactly level after all these criteria, the outcome depends on the significance of the position:

For non-critical positions: The teams are separated by alphabetical order.

For 2nd place (Promotion): Because automatic promotion to the Premier League is at stake, the teams must be separated by a one-off play-off match at a neutral venue.

Goals scored. Currently that is Ipswich 71, Southampton 73.
