She is chair of the committee so should keep her opinions to herself not least because the committee hasn't finished its deliberations and her view may not reflect that of the committee as a whole. She is also a lawyer and so just should not be expressing her opinion on an employment issue when she does not know the full facts. Maybe she's angling for a place in government. Rachel Reeves has done it too. As a lawyer, Starmer should be putting a stop to this because in my view it is not right or proper for a Minister of the Crown to be expressing a view on a live employment law issue involving a former Crown servant.

Even with polls considerably more people wanted Johnson out than do Starmer. He’s deeply unpopular for sure, but there’s very little in it in recent times, although it makes for a punchy soundbite I suppose. Lies, damn lies and statistics and all that. |
There were opinion polls back in the days of Chamberlain and Eden. Neville Chamberlain experienced high approval ratings after the 1938 Munich Agreement, with +57% satisfaction by October 1938. Support peaked at +68% after war broke out, but fell to a net -27 by May 1940. Eden started at +70 but fell to +40 after Suez. Starmer's approval rating has been as low as -57 this year.

I am not sure if this from the editor of the New Statesman is better. "One of the privileges – if that is the right word – of my job is to speak with MPs, cabinet ministers, government officials and political advisers on a regular basis, usually in private, over lunch or dinner or a glass of wine. And when I do so, the same story has been repeated again and again. The prime minister is failing. He is not doing the job. He cannot do the job. The country can see this too. And yet, for months, nothing changed, the party as dumb and docile and fatalistic as before. MPs declare the status quo cannot continue, but the herd does not move, and is unsure what to do – how, when or why …" On the other hand, Badenoch was hopeless at PMQs with so much she could have gone on.

Sorry- but this is a red herring. Robbins kept referring to no10 or the cabinet office- never any specifics about actual people saying actual things. Robbins also said it had no impact ont he decision. Reality here appears to be that the vetting was not "failed", that the FO made a decision unaffected by pressure, which Robbins still considers correct, and that tehy do not share the vetting info which is confidential.

And yet, none of it is even close to Boris's level.
