I will never know. That is shocking refereeing. As bad a challenge as you will ever see.

Only worse if the fella had been on the ground - then it would have been a definite leg breaker a la Keane/Haaland.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

We didn't want him sent off. Ref had a direct line to Ashton.

Awful 'tackle' - straight red.
And yet, on FB people are blaming his mini shin pads!

Just saw a replay of the tackle. It could have been a leg breaker and can't see why it was not a red card.

Both can be true. I thought he was literally a fraction of a second late. Not sure there was intent. Never a leg breaker- both going for ball with high feet. Nothing planted.

Intent is not considered in rugby reds so why would it be in football? Mitigation is but that does not apply in football. I don't think it would not be a red if he didn't intend to break his leg.

Its about whether its dangerous. But all those factors are part, realistically, of a ref's decision.

It looked a genuine effort which was fractionally late to me. Painful but not really dangerous. I don't think its a red.
