I know it's the fashionable formation preferred by good teams, just don't think we have the players to pull it off. Wonder if we'd have fared better this season playing by 532, 5311, or even good old 442. I know McK wouldn't do it but the team look so disjointed.

Seems to have gotten us to 2nd in the league, and a win from achieving our goal, so no complaints from me. Kieran seems to know what he's doing.

In possession our shape resembles more of an asymmetrical 3-4-1-2

Walton GK

Furlong RCB
O’Shea CB
Kipre/Greaves LCB

McAteer RM
Matusiwa, MC
Taylor MC
Davis ML

Nunez/Anis AMC

Philogene Clarke AMLC/LF

Azon/Hirst CF

I see nothing wrong with our shape- in or out of possession, I actually think McKenna is very astute with this and shows an incredible understanding of how different players play different roles, despite playing in the sane position.
Game management is a strong suit of his IMO.

It works. Its just both mehmeti and nunez are failing to perform. It is really hurting us. Nunez was better when he came on but the last time he started he was poor.

I don’t think Matusiwa and Taylor are good enough on the ball to make this formation truly fly for us, also coupled with the fact we don’t have 10s that seem to link things up that well.

It worked very well with Morsy and Luongo

Very true. They are both careless in possession and Mehmeti in particular looks a shadow of the player he was when he first came here. And Nunez’ corners aren’t much better than his free-kicks.

Two vital pieces both underperforming.

It worked with those because we had Chaplin, Hutchinson etc.

With both Mehmeti and Nunez turning in regular stinkers, it makes it a lot harder.

It's not and never has been 4-2-3-1, ever.

I think 4-3-3 would have suited this squad much better. 3 CMs, one holding and 2 more box to box, would have given more solidity at times and a bit more threat through the middle.

Can also see a world where 5 at the back would have been extremely effective with Leif and Johnson as full backs in some games but then you are possibly Stifling the wingers that said how about 5 2 3? That would give the wingers licence to cut in a bit more with marauding overlapping fullbacks.

Johnson Darnell DOS Greaves Leif

I'll bring this out...again...

Kieran McKenna - agile, adaptive, adept and astute. by homer_123 12 Apr 9:23
I have never been one to believe that KM is rigid in his approach. Since he has joined us, he has shown that, whilst on paper we line up as a 4-2-3-1 formation, the reality is that the approach to each game is different depending on circumstances.

Over the years, we have played 3 at the back, 5 at the back, we have Davis being an inside forward, and overlapping winger. We've had Clarke bombing on from the right. We have seen Morsey and Luongo drop deep to cover those runs. We have played out from the back, looking to play through the lines, we've gone long and direct into Hirst and Moore. We've looked to switch the play with diagonal raking passes. We've scored a whole range of different goals, from different positions and players.

I have never understood the thinking that he's inflexible. If I am being fair, the only thing you 'could' lay at his door is that he hasn't played 'two up top'.

This season does feel different though. Whilst we still have an attacking edge and real threat going forward - my two observations are.

1. We are even better on the break than we have been in the past, our transition can be excellent at times.
2. Defensively, we look more solid.

I feel he has adapted us again, we 'feel' more solid. Historically, we have sometimes blown teams away (we are still capable of that) and looked to 'score one more than you'. This season is different and yesterday was a masterclass of what some teams have done to us over the years.

Forged from our time in the Prem (I suspect) - that low'ish block and fast transition yesterday was superb and Norwich had no answer. We looked really solid defensively and that is from the front players through to the excellent Dara and Jacob. Yet, we created as well - we moved the ball really well at times, moving through the gears to get forward. I make KM right, we could have had 3 or 4 in that first half.

Norwich struggled, they huffed and puffed but ultimately worked off scraps and little in the way of genuine sustained pressure. Which given their recent form (and fair play to Clement for what he has done) was really pleasing to see from our side.

There is a steel about us that I like at the moment. It might not be quite as gung ho or exciting as KM had us playing early doors but there is, arguably, a better balance with us right now.

Finally, KMs insistence with squad depth and rotation. I do understand the frustration at times from supporters (I am not immune myself) but it is evident to me that we look fresher than other teams right now with Cov, Boro, Hull and Wrexham all showing signs of the long haul that the Championship is. In the trenches of the final few weeks - it really is working for us.

KM has always been a manager that learns.

Yesterday was a wonderful example of this and illustrates just how good a manager he is.

The Norwich game was a bit of an outlier though. All about the passion. In general we've rarely looked comfortable with our setup this season.

Its the first bit.

4231 is only 'ever' on paper.

KM has stated on numerous occasions that we dont do formations. Modern football is about how you setup in possession and out of possession AND more importantly in transition.

Formations are a moot point.

That's all waffle though isn't it. If we were set up 442 for example, we wouldn't look anything like we do now. Even just 2 up top, be a totally different vibe. (especially with our current 2 no. 9's)

He has said it, but it's a bit of a hmmm comment really

Off the ball we get organised for sure, but we do play with the ball with 4 defenders, 2 cms 3 players in front of those and 1 up top.

Sure occasionally they may shift a position to drop maybe 5 yards but the general gist of it is a 4 2 3 1

Today was kind of a prime point that 4 2 3 1 was in prime showing, it wasn't until nunez was introduced and dropped a bit deeper than mehmeti did, that our 2 in midfield had a third man to pass to, he was still higher than them so it was still a 4 2 3 1, but his movement just opened the game up for us better.

Its intriguing. Things so often come full circle. I wonfer whether over the next couple of years, we will find 442 coming back and countering the 4213s that have dominated and are now used to combatting similar formations.
