Fans were excited, the mood was amazing and most believed great things could and would happen and got 100% behind the team. The difference in mood this season, considering we require 3 points from the last 2 games is worlds apart. Aren't fans weird!?

The moments of elation obviously aren't comparable. But week to week in 23/24 I was expecting it to fall away any moment and it would have been crushing if it had. This time,I've mainly been confident we'd do it. So I've felt less stressed. Except for the last few weeks when it's been very edgy. |
In 23/24 I was stressed and pessimistic because I thought the difference in quality would catch up with us. But the fight and endeavour pulled us through. In 25/26 I've been stressed and pessimistic because I thought a lack of fluidity/understanding would catch up with us. But it seems like the quality of some players may pull us through.

Somebody who's good at this stuff can I'm sure look up the accounts but I would imagine our wage bill alone is currently 2-4x, maybe more, what it was in 23/24. [Post edited 25 Apr 21:04]

Thats irrelevant though, the market conditions and our position financially has changed massively since then, agents/clubs/players know we have money and so we have to pay a premium for it. But the players weve bought replaced a team from league 1 and have greater chance of being longterm successes at higher levels.

We were promoted from L1, not expecting to do anything but survive, and we mounted an amazing - albeit very imperfect - campaign and got promoted. But this was two years premature to the plan, which forced our hand to purchase riskily to try to survive. I think, now, if we are being objective, there IS more strength in depth, but the wholesale changes we had to make to get there have affected team fluidity and connection. To achieve promotion despite not having that galvanised, close knit team that was essentially together since L1, is still something to celebrate. |
Its hard to argue that season was imperfect when we got 96 points. Thats an amount that would win the division in most seasons, including this one.
