Southampton is an odd scenario game 16:29 - Apr 26 with 2164 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

Considering the stakes it’s fairly remarkable that a point doesn’t change much with it being a stand alone fixture between two promotion contenders in the second last game (thanks Bristol!)

Here’s what a draw does at the top;

- Takes the race to the last day for 3 teams
- Knocks Southampton out of the race
- Means we’d stay above Millwall if we lost and they drew last day (surely highly unlikely)
- Means we should finish above Boro if we also draw last day and they win (but below Millwall if they won)

So yes, there is a scenario where I guess a point could help us finish second last day if a weird set of results were thrown up eg Boro fail to win, we lose and Millwall draw or Boro win, we Draw and Millwall fail to win. But outside of that it’s basically pointless (excuse the pun).

If Southampton win;

- 4 teams go into last day with a genuine shot, 3 of them on fairly close GD
- Southampton would then need Millwall and Ipswich to fail to win and to beat Preston for top 2 and to also keep an eye on a Boro score due to a close GD
- Boro could then go up if they win and all other teams fail to win or they overtake Saints on GD
- Millwall go up if they win and Ipswich fail to beat QPR (same scenario as Ipswich drawing at St Mary’s)

Or IPSWICH beat Southampton;

- Ipswich are promoted.

In short, go for the win, we have +17 goals to play with over Millwall so a 6-0 loss changes little of what we probably have to do last day! I know everyone knows that but I find it fun to look at anyway!

I don't get why people are pushing back on what you posted.

It's all pretty simple - 3 points almost certainly ensures 2nd, and we have 2 games to get those 3 points. Drawing doesn't help on Tuesday - we'd still go into Saturday needing a win to guarantee 2nd regardless of other results, so why wouldn't we go all out for a win on Tuesday and try to tie up 2nd we a game remaining? If we fail to win, we gate a 2nd chance on Saturday.

Probably because some don’t even know what our competitors points totals are or understand the permutations even when you put it in black and white ;)

How do people be engrossed in a race and not look at the table! I’m glad I’m being of some help!

Oh id have seen it. But didnt take it in. I think in my head I've been concentrating so much on millwall and just had in my head that southampton were in the chase but only because of gd.

So yeah im glad you've pointed it out :)

Yes absolutely.

There will still be some trotting out the old cliché a draw is a good result win yer homes draw yer aways though 😂

Yes, as per edit, I got a bit in a muddle.

However, the draw does stop Southampton. I still think it is preferable to a defeat for many reasons.

Really, I want a win and get it over with. I don't want us needing to win or waiting on other results on the final day.

Not really, I couldn’t care if we have 5 teams that can catch us on the last day or one really, we simply are going to have to beat QPR anyway IMO. We should go all out for the win Tuesday. That’s what yesterdays result allowed.

Would be very different if either them or Boro had 1 more point looking at the GD. Bristol’s two away results have rather helped us at both!

It will be very different from Saturday's game. WBA knew they needed a point to be safe & after an hour, either they tired, we got better or possibly they shut up shop, knowing a draw was all they needed.
Southampton will make changes - they changed 6 for their Cup game - but they will come at us like a house on fire because they know a draw is useless to them. They will also throw caution to the winds if the game is still level late in the second half. While a win is also much more valuable to us than a draw, I reckon we will play the game pretty cagey, hoping to keep it tight & hit Saints on the break.
