Southampton is an odd scenario game 16:29 - Apr 26 with 2635 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

Considering the stakes it’s fairly remarkable that a point doesn’t change much with it being a stand alone fixture between two promotion contenders in the second last game (thanks Bristol!)

Here’s what a draw does at the top;

- Takes the race to the last day for 3 teams
- Knocks Southampton out of the race
- Means we’d stay above Millwall if we lost and they drew last day (surely highly unlikely)
- Means we should finish above Boro if we also draw last day and they win (but below Millwall if they won)

So yes, there is a scenario where I guess a point could help us finish second last day if a weird set of results were thrown up eg Boro fail to win, we lose and Millwall draw or Boro win, we Draw and Millwall fail to win. But outside of that it’s basically pointless (excuse the pun).

If Southampton win;

- 4 teams go into last day with a genuine shot, 3 of them on fairly close GD
- Southampton would then need Millwall and Ipswich to fail to win and to beat Preston for top 2 and to also keep an eye on a Boro score due to a close GD
- Boro could then go up if they win and all other teams fail to win or they overtake Saints on GD
- Millwall go up if they win and Ipswich fail to beat QPR (same scenario as Ipswich drawing at St Mary’s)

Or IPSWICH beat Southampton;

- Ipswich are promoted.

In short, go for the win, we have +17 goals to play with over Millwall so a 6-0 loss changes little of what we probably have to do last day! I know everyone knows that but I find it fun to look at anyway!

If we win either game we have at least an 18 goal advantage. We can get absolutely hammered. Oxford can get hammered and it's still not likely to get anywhere near.

I know it was just a bit of fun. We should literally be sending Walton up for a corner if it’s 0-0 late! Weird game state!

Nah, that's for Southampton to do if it's a draw later on.

Oxford winning is unlikely. Oxford playing with freedom and getting a point unlikely but much less unlikely...got to keep that onside if it came down to that situation.

Completely agree we go for the win right now though. Would be daft not to.

Hopefully a counter attacking masterclass.

Southampton absolutely have to win which means they will go all out for the win. Of course, if they get their nose ahead they could be much more defensive but I don't think that's particularly how they play anyway. That should suit how we play anyway. We just need to be solid defensively and take some of our chances (or maybe even just one of them). We nearly always create chances.

EDIT: Forget the last sentence of this paragraph to a degree - I have credited Southampton with 1 more point than they have. Even so I think a draw is much better than a defeat for us:
A draw takes Southampton out of the equation altogether and leaves Boro and Millwall both having to win and hope we don't on the last day. Southampton winning leaves Millwall and Southampton just needing to better our result on the final day to move ahead of us. Since Southampton have 6 goals worse goal difference on us, they could easily better it if they beat us. They will want to win by 2 or 3 against us to give them every chance of that.

A draw is far better for us than a defeat.

A draw (as supposed to a defeat) means that Southampton cannot catch us at all.

It would also mean that if we lose, Millwall would still stay behind us if they draw with Oxford. It would require Boro to fail to win as well for us to stay in second, though.

Let's just win on Tuesday!

Exactly, we can just beat QPR instead of needing a result at Southampton, fantastic point that now allows a free hit with it all in our hands whatever happens. As KM said in his press conference, would have been stupid chasing the game yesterday and risking defeat. So looks like you’re still very very wrong!

In all of this I didnt realise southampton were actually 4 points behind it thought it was three so just kept thinking they will go all out to score and ruin our GD in hope they can then out score us on the final day.

In that case. I do wonder now if they might be a bit more pragmatic and play those are simply fit and anyone not quite will be rested for the playoffs.

We should go all out if it’s level late! As my post indicates! Unless we think Millwall won’t beat Oxford and we might lose to QPR, that would be stupid.

Your minimum good result against WBA was a draw and now your minimum good result against Southampton is a win! Would it not have been better the other way around? Let's hope it'll be alright on the night v QPR then if we don't beat Southampton.

Yes, as per edit, I got a bit in a muddle.

However, the draw does stop Southampton. I still think it is preferable to a defeat for many reasons.

Really, I want a win and get it over with. I don't want us needing to win or waiting on other results on the final day.

I do understand. I think it boils down to this.

If the target is "need 3 points in the last game", then is that a good target from the position you are in? For example if we are 5 points clear with 5 left I think we'd both say "no". If we needed 4 points from 2 games (i.e. a defeat is catastrophic) I think we'd both say "yes".

We needed 4 points from 3. I felt "no" as I feel 3 points from 1 is a deterioration in our position, you felt "yes". That's fine.

We should beat QPR.

That said a win at Southampton removes any nerves or pressure. We may as well go to win. I really don’t think a draw is useful at all. The odds of Southampton getting second now is very slim.

Millwall will surely beat Oxford and frankly, we should beat QPR.

Respectfully you said a draw is of “little use to us” yesterday when we needed 4 points to be guaranteed promotion. It was the first of 2 very hard away games and it would put us back in second going into last day at home.

You don’t need a calculus degree to realize that’s obviously very silly.

It is a bit of an anomaly. Both teams can afford to attack with no real loss of position if they lose. That should suit us, but our attacking play hasn't exactly been fluent lately. I'd say our chances of a win are low unless we can suddenly get things clicking. Maybe with Nunez, Philogene, and Hirst (I know, but more likely than Azon atm) on the pitch we might be a more dangerous prospect.

I think I’d keep it tight for a bit and get a sense of how much they’re throwing at us. Let’s face it they need to two big home favorites to drop points last day still to get second, not impossible of course. But it just doesn’t feel like it would be the same than if they could get above us Tuesday and who knows the emotional energy yesterday took out of them.

Respectfully I said "not much use" and I clarified what I meant by that in that although it gives us something, I felt we lose more by not winning, for the reasons given.

To be fair you were giving it all the "people aren't getting it" as though it was an open and shut case, when clearly it's a debatable topic, and one I've quite enjoyed actually.

You’re clearly enjoying it to bring up again.

I’d have loved a win yesterday as well of course but a draw was a massive point, as myself and others including our manager have explained.

I don't get why people are pushing back on what you posted.

It's all pretty simple - 3 points almost certainly ensures 2nd, and we have 2 games to get those 3 points. Drawing doesn't help on Tuesday - we'd still go into Saturday needing a win to guarantee 2nd regardless of other results, so why wouldn't we go all out for a win on Tuesday and try to tie up 2nd we a game remaining? If we fail to win, we gate a 2nd chance on Saturday.
