We really must meet up for a pint when I'm down for Celtic Connections in January (and if you love your music I can thoroughly recommend Roddy Hart's Roaming Roots Revue at the Royal Concert Hall.) |
It's a date. | |

This is a turn up for the books but may not be reflective of what happens elsewhere. Shetland: 'Seismic' result as SNP beat Lib Dems This is a seismic result for the SNP. The last time Shetland was represented by anyone other than a Liberal was in 1950. The SNP have been campaigning hard in Shetland for a number of years. Famously, they spent more money campaigning in the by-election here in 2019 than they did on the whole of the Brexit referendum. But really this is down to the hard graft of a good local candidate in Hannah Goodlad. She works for a Norwegian energy company and runs a mobile sauna business and, as such, will be one of the few SNP MSPs who doesn't come with prior political experience. One local suggested he'd voted for her because she'd put a terrific effort into her campaign, demonstrating her genuine commitment to, and understanding of, the community
| Elections tomorrow for someone who doesn't follow politics too much on 16:01 - May 8 with 260 views | DJR | Sticking to the Scottish theme, it is early days yet but good to see Reform not in second place. "After 20 out of 73 constituency results in the Scottish parliament election, the SNP have 17 seats, while Scottish Labour, the Scottish Conservatives and the Scottish Lib Dems each hold one, the Press Association reports. The SNP’s share of the vote is around 40%, while Labour’s is around 19%, the Tories is around 16% and Reform UK’s is 16%. The Liberal Democrats are on around 9% of the constituency vote." | | | |
| Elections tomorrow for someone who doesn't follow politics too much on 16:14 - May 8 with 239 views | Kievthegreat | For the English Local elections: 1) Good for Reform, underwhelming for the Greens, horrendous for the Tories and Labour, Lib Dems in the weird position of not having much going for them, but not getting a kicking and ending up slightly up. 2) They've won a lot of votes, but potentially with a lower vote share than last local elections. TBC of course as also requires some calculation to get to a representative vote share for a GE. Their numbers of seats will always look good from a low base and with a split opposition, they are maximising the FPTP system. However, they are also potentially confirming they've lost a small amount of ground in the past 12 months, in line with national polling. 3) There will be pressure on Starmer, but the question is whether anyone will have the guts to make a move. I don't think he's stepping aside, so someone will need to politically stab him in the back. 4) Lost of inexperienced councillors on a jolly for 12 month. Expect approximately 100 of the Reform councillors to have quit either the party or their seat by this time in 12 months. However it's mostly just confirming that Reform have a solid 25% vote and other parties need to get a grip. | | | |

I was in the hall in Inverness as we watched the Shetland result on the big screen, I think that is when the Lib Dens started to really worry about our seat. As a counting agent I think I can safely say that thoughts of an SNP collapse are greatly exaggerated.

The result doesn't seem to be in yet for where you live. Any inkling?

I thought the Lib Dems were running away with it at first but when you are sampling the count polling station by polling station you can get misled by a few isolated counts. I think it is going to be close but sadly Labour are nowhere. I left towards the end of lunchtime as I had over two hours to drive home but wish I had held on to see the reaction for our victory in the Western Isles.

Good result in the Western Isles. Has the ferry farce had any effect on voting?

Sky is reporting that Labour are on 20% ahead of Reform on 16% which is relatively good news because there was talk of Labour coming third. I know there is the regional list vote to come but it would be nice to think Reform don't come second.

That's what the BBC say, there were rumours it was going well when I was still in the hall so I guess it was a case of the SNP losing the seat on a vital issue. But it takes a good candidate to gain the votes that Donald Mackinnon has. Might explain why Kate Forbes gave me a few minutes of her time today to explain my concerns on a couple of issues in our constituency...

| Elections tomorrow for someone who doesn't follow politics too much on 20:33 - May 8 with 90 views | Kievthegreat | Projected national share in England (estimate if everyone in the country voted today) BBC projects national share
With 4 parties between 16-20% it is not clear who was 2nd/3rd/4th nationally
Reform 26%
Greens 18%
Labour 17%
Cons 17%
LibDems 16% — Sunder Katwala (sundersays) (@sundersays.bsky.social) 2026-05-08T19:12:01.320Z Reform lead the way on 26%, with the other 4 parties all on 18-16%. However that is Down from the 30% they got last May which backs up their small slump in the polls. Personally looking forward to the absolutely crazy scenario of 5 parties, all on 19% and the chaos that would cause.

| Elections tomorrow for someone who doesn't follow politics too much on 07:25 - May 7 by naa | The problem there is that Reform are a party of low tax yet every council they run has had some of the highest raises in the country so you can't even rely on them for that. And they have also wasted vast amounts on stupid things like parking spaces for themselves, flags and, ironically, a team to find where to save money (which they haven't succeeded in doing because councils have been stretched for the last 15 years). Reform have also had a massive turnover of councillors because they tend to be people without any experience and realise it's a really tough job. |
That is interesting to know. I suspect their supporters won't look closely enough to see that, though. Either that or they will think the reversal of all the "woke" nonsense will be worth the extra cost even when it spells the end of the NHS, workers' rights, etc. I overheard this morning someone saying that the reason we have so many Turkish barbers is because the Government pays illegal immigrants to run a shop for a year, paying all the costs involved for the whole year. So, clearly this is who these voters expect to see in the internment camps.

Remember a large proportion of their voters are as ignorant as feck
