Once a politician becomes relevant the digging starts - best thing for him to do is to be utterly shameless, shrug his shoulders and tell journalists that that is all in the past.

Like Starmer’s suits, this is going to get played far more than Farage’s racism and £5 million ‘gift’.

And that says a lot about this country.

you mean he should go full trump with the shameless fibbing. but it's ok cos he's one of us.

It doesn't look like the Telegraph has even run a story on Farage's £5m bung.

Farage’s racism has been exposed numerous times by the media and continues to do so. He has been challenged on multiple occasions about the £5 million. Just this weekend Sky challenged. As did the beeb.

So your point is utter nonsense.

As for Zack, he’s being exposed AS A Walter Mitty (or is that Walter Titty) chancer. What do you object to about this being discussed?

He’s a fantasist.

He used all of the above during his bid to become deputy leader/ leader of the greens.

That’s exactly what he’s saying.

One thread about Zack being a fantasist . Dozens of threads on reform racism and crookery. I think that seems fair proportionally.

I quite like the fact Pervy Polanski is shaking up politics.

And today, Zack will be……. on 09:43 - May 11 with 3833 viewsgrow_our_own

It emerged today that Polanski is also either a tax evader or voter fraudster:

More likely a the former. He did what most of the rich will do if ever his fantasy tax-raising comes into being: find a way not to pay it. The difference being, the rich won't break the law doing it.

Doesn't this all prove his point?

A quarter of voters would vote for Farage to become PM today, despite what you have said. Which means either:

- The media scrutiny on his racism, undeclared gifts, and barely-there policies has not made it's way through to mainstream voters in a way that the criticisms (both valid and not) of Starmer and Polanski have done; or

- a quarter of the population don't care, and would happily vote in a party lead by a racist who takes undeclared gifts from unknown sources and advocates for policies that benefit those sources, while having policies with no substance underneath them.

I'm not sure which is a worse look for our society.

Starmer hasn't been a great PM. His domestic politicking has been awful, his approach to new policy has been hit and miss at best, the support within his party is fractured at best, but the stuff that is hidden away, like quality of services, is slowly improving. We have probably gone from awful to not great, which doesn't yet register on most people's radars, but hopefully that trend will continue. Big thumbs up for his international policy, particularly standing up to the US over Iran.

Discussions of politicians’ tax mistakes are often accompanied by calls for police investigations and prosecutions. In this case, and most others, such calls would be misplaced. There is no reason to believe that Mr Polanski’s failure to pay council tax was intentional or dishonest. Questions of criminal tax evasion therefore don’t arise.

It's not for journalists to call for police to investigate & CPS to press for convictions. That's for them to decide. Journalists give the facts and present the story. Doesn't mean Polanski didn't cheat his taxes.

Agreed. Right now, I'd vote for any politician that is only mildly bad. Compared to the last few calamitous ones we've had who've caused Brexit, Trussonomics, and tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths during covid, Starmer is a triumphant success. Don't even need to qualify that when it comes to his foreign policy. He and his govt need time.

Making arrangements to pay council tax on a "property" that isn't permissible to be used as such* would be a bold move and one unlikely to end well, I'd speculate. Not something I'm overly exercised about, alternative lifestyles like this, lived out on the margins of society and the law, providing they don't harm others and providing take-up remains very modest (if we all opted to clandestinely live on these boats then that would be a worry!).

It's another layer to the man's origin story though, however one feels about the degree of misdemeanour.

*"Note that the legality of the occupation is not a factor. This was a “leisure mooring”, and so the fact Mr Polanski resided there may have been a breach of his contract with the marina, and/or a breach of planning control. But if there is residential use then council tax applies, regardless of whether that use was lawful."
