I take it you accept that there's a massive ethical imperative to rebalance the taxation system - both personal and corporate - to address poverty, inequality, and the collapse of national infrastructure, just not Polanski's way?

This is real wealth: per capita. The hard-left keeps wanging-on that we're "sixth biggest economy in the world", but the pie is actually quite small relative to the quantity of mouths feeding from it. It all starts with higher growth and productivity. The hard-left have little to say on that.

Just playing devil's avocado here, but surely it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he did make an unintentional mistake due to his very unique living circumstances?

Also, why would you be against taxing the rich more... unless you're one of them? Is it necessarily "populism" to want a fairer tax system?

Again, just playing devil's advocate because these things tend to turn out to be not as cut and dried as they first seem and I'd like to know more detail before making my decision.

Pretty much no other country has them because they know their rich will swan-off to Dubai, taking their skills and productivity out of the economy. Only wealth tax that can ever work is land tax, which I'm in favour of instead of the current council tax. Can't move land to Dubai. The Green Party's absolute percent tax on wealth (% on assets over £xx million) will never be collected in anything like the quantity it is budgeting. It's fantasy populism. It's purpose is only to fool the electorate into empowering grifters. The bond market know this and will f#ck your mortgage if ever the Greens or their policies come to power.

We could start with our MP’s paying their fair share - their income puts them in the top 1pc, and yet seemingly so many of them (of all colours) struggle to understand their own tax legislation - despite having access to a whole host of advisors, and the disposable income to pay for a semi competent accountant.

The frequency of which they fall fouls leads to suspicions that it’s no accident.

As for their NI plans, whilst I agree we need to raise more for the NHS, it will just hit a small section of middle earners on PAYE. The rich aren’t taking a salary, and the self employed will continue to pay a lower rate and enjoy the same services.

A lot of the rich just draw their income from property and dividends rhough - if we lost a few property owners and Russian oligarchs to Dubai that’s not really going to impact the economy. The main criticism is the fanciful claims by the Greens how much it would actually raise. I’m not sure I buy the ‘they’ll all leave’, Norway has more billionaires per capita than the UK and is hardly a tax haven.

When you say "Pretty much no other country has them"... "pretty much" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Switzerland, Norway, Spain and Colombia apparently have a successful wealth tax, and the idea that the rich swan off to Dubai has been seen to be hugely exaggerated. A wealth tax can work if it's implimented properly.

This is a football forum, and I'm a busy man. "They'll all swan off to Dubai" is my shortcut to exemplify that the tax-gap will be huge, and wealth taxes will raise very little revenue. They'll definitely raise very little if people "forget" to pay them like Zack Polanski.

those 3 european countries raise very little via wealth taxes - Switzerland 4.3% of total tax revenue, Spain 0.6%, and Norway 1.5%. for comparison income tax in the uk raises 28%. you also need to look at the tax regime in full - there are things those other countries don't otherwise tax (particularly the swiss system). in the uk capital taxes already amount to 4% of tax revenue. also norway's wealth tax kicks in at net assets of £125,000.

"absolute meritocracy" - it's an average. Not all money is old money. Much is in the hands of the deserving: those who've worked hard, are talented, and who contribute significantly to the economy. I'm in favour of land tax and inheritance tax. I'm just not pulling a % of total wealth out of my arse and expecting anywhere near that to be received by HMRC like the Greens do.

I wasn't just referring to the tax story. That question is legitimate to be asked. I'm talking about the drip feed we're getting now of several stories, some more flimsy than others. The fact that I used the phrase "drip feed" should've been a clue I wasn't talking about one thing.
