You can't quantify the level of advantage they had or the points they gained because of it (assuming it's been done outside of the Boro incident). All you can say is that the perceived advantage from the Southampton end was high enough for them to risk being caught breaking an EFL rule. As I see it the punishment needs to strong as this will set a precedent/deterrent going forwards. Leeds got away with being fined £200k as their wasn't a rule written at the time. As I said earlier in the thread, being thrown out of the play offs seems the only solution to me if they are proven guilty. They could only have themselves to blame. |
Southampton broke the rules seeking an advantage. Whether it worked not is irrelevant.
Field an ineligible player, even if it was simple administrative error, the game is null & void.
Middlesbrough advance to the final 4-2 on aggregate. Add on a points deduction as it was a wilful act. |  |

Personally I think the EFL should give Saints a 15 point deduction and recommend that it is carried over to the PL if they are promoted. This means pretty much guaranteed relegation next season or if still in the Championship make it much more difficult to get promoted.
I don’t think the EFL should alter results of football matches or reinstate Boro. It would make the playoff final a farce and be unfair on Hull who can’t prepare if they don’t know who they will be playing. |  |

I think this will go one of two ways: insignificant fine or major punishment.
I'd like to see Soton relegated to L1 and a Boro v Hull final, but a suspect there'll be a fine and potential points deduction in the Prem if it is discovered that other matches were effected. |  |

I agree ... not only can you not alter results after games but you have to give Southampton a fair right to reply and if you kick them out entirely at this stage, you risk real legal damage.
The best course of action is to proceed with Soton vs Hull and continue to build the investigation, then bring the action after the final when you know the situation.
If they did it once, they should be fined, staff banned and handed a hefty points deduction regardless of what league they are in.
If they did it continually throughout the season and get promoted, they should be fined, staff banned and have their promotion voided with Hull going up.
That way the final gets played, broadcasters, partners and fans are appeased and then you hand that punishment down in 11 days time giving Soton an opportunity to appeal it and you'd have it resolved before the transfer window/ pre-season starts. | | | |
