WE are thinking doing a trip involving Victoria Falls, the Chobe River plus a safari. Received wisdom seems to be that the best months for game viewing are May through October, which is the dry season. Anyone got any experience/advice to offer, please?

Been to those places twice, although the last time was in 2010. You won't regret it, it's an incredible part of the world and Chobe is an absolute gem. I was there June-July both times and saw absolutely loads, the weather was perfect. All I'd say is get yourselves there!

Best game viewing is in their Winter as less rain and therefore grasses and bushes not so lush and can see deeper into the ‘bush’. May - October is correct. My safari experience is all based on Kruger National Park area. I am fortunate to go to Kruger National Park every few years, but that is self-drive within the park (mostly) and we are well practised at it. If you can I would suggest a private game reserve in the Greater Kruger area - Timbavati or SabiSands as they are still open reserves with the rest of the Kruger but you benefit from being driven/guided and will see all the animals within 3 days whilst being pampered! Self-drive in Kruger National Park is definitely not pampered and mostly self-catering! All down to personal taste, budget and time available.

I spent a bit of time in Vic Falls many years ago

My main recollections were:

Take some smart stuff to wear; the casino is well worth a visit, but there was a dress code. I borrowed a shirt that was waaay too tight, a pair of ludicously baggy trousers and the Casino kindly lent me a pair of size 17 shiny black shoes. I looked like a clown.

Joke was on them, I won big on the blackjack table tho'

Very passable champagne was a modest 50p per bottle, payable in your casino chips. It was like being a millionaire in Monaco but oh so much more affordable. Whilst looking like a clown.

Crocodile tail does not really taste like chicken..... more like cotton wool lightly infused with fish essence

The Falls themselves are spectacular

The whitewater rafting was brilliant.... highlight of my trip

Enjoy.... Africa is wonderful and Zimbabwe is awesome

The falls are amazing to see, take a helicopter over to really appreciate its size and beauty, whitewater rafting is great too
Zimbabwe and Botswana are beautiful, my highlights are the Chobe, Motobo national park and the Ockavango Delta
You'll have an amazing time

I did a sunset safari on the Chobe River mid-September 2024, beyond incredible, hundreds of animals in every direction you'd look.

Make sure to take a nice camera!
