The bare figures at Al Ahli are certainly very impressive. 32 matches, 32 goals and 7 assists. LD hasn't done anything remotely good enough to be there this time. So it could almost be by default that IT would go.

Staying with us wasn’t an option, that’s why we needed to dart up, otherwise you don’t keep talent. The championship is two levels below the other league, everybody knows it. Toney has a great record at that level, I’m assuming Watkins makes it, in which case he’ll be third choice and fair enough. Delap is miles off his level - he needed a move to an Everton etc .., like a lot of our group, playing Oxford won’t improve him.., and some of our players doing well this season, they’re likely not going to make it. That’s the reality. It’s a tough league.

My original comment was obviously tongue in cheek and Delap was never going to stay with us once we were relegated. But when he left us last summer he would in his mind have thought he was in with a shout of getting a World Cup call up (if he had a good season). He should have moved to a club like Everton, Forest or Newcastle. Instead he has regressed and his confidence is shattered. My point was that if he had stayed with us (and scored a bucketload of goals) he would be closer to World Cup selection than he is now!

Are we saying someone whos got an outside chance of being in the England World Cup squad is not good enough for us?

It would appear so. | |

And if he didn't score a bucketload of goals? Nothing guaranteed in football.

Our starting 11 and first 3-4 subs is elite level but thereafter there’s some real head scratches. In no particular order I think, Cowill, Gibbs White, Bowen, Hall, Wharton and Maguire all had better shouts than a good few that made it. I’d have found a place for Palmer in the 26 as well. MGW and Hall not in is actually a bit of a joke. He’s probably the best true out and out LB in the country, kept Yamal in check in the CL. O’Reilly is class and obviously fine to start but can also play midfield a lot. If you want to take someone as an experienced leader why not Maguire in a position you need depth who has had a good season, not Henderson who is in over Wharton. Dan Burn is no way near the level to make the squad with the talent we have. [Post edited 22 May 2:53]
