For the first time, I watched the whole match back in full on Youtube yesterday (I'd only ever watched the highlights back)
A few things struck me:
1) Marcus Stewart is the best player I have seen play for Town in the flesh. He was miles ahead of his time in terms of movement and dropping deep for the ball. Also ridiculous in the air, a lovely little 'flick' first touch and a great presser too. He would flourish in the 'shadow striker' role in the modern game.
2) John Mcgreal was a proper player. Really great at reading the game and him and Veno both had decent pings on them.
3) Always remember us playing lovely football under Burley but easy to forget how much we would mix it up as well. In that final, we would try and play long into Stewie at every opportunity.
4) Bam Bam's performance in the second half was world class. A great finish, a worldie touch to tee up Clapham for Marcus' goal and then great strength for the assist for Reuser....Premiership.
Also didn't realise that I made the telly at the time! 26 years later!
We were half way up the upper tier behind the goal to the left of the goalposts. What a moment as Reuser broke. Everybody knew what’d happen next.
And just over half the old stadium went berserk.
Was there too, halfway up the stand to your left, between that Barnsley goalmouth and the halfway line.
Think that whole day was probably the best of my life, from staying with a friend at a N. London rellie’s (now sadly gone & greatly missed); via the friendly red and blue human ribbons walking up Wemburley Way, unpoliced; the game itself; and then sharing a train carriage back to Yorkshire with some wonderful Barnsley fans who were singing & laughing away as if they’d won. Also memorable were the Blades fans tifos hung from railway bridges - Blades 4 -2 Tykes ; cheeky barstewards!
