| How much do washing machine repair workers charge 15:16 - May 29 with 435 views | wkj | The washing machine has finally given up. Went to investigate after hearing an alarming amount of metallic clunking and discovered what appears to be a bent piece of wire lodged somewhere inside the drum mechanism. No idea where it came from. I certainly don't recall washing any wire hangers. The machine now makes a noise like a shopping trolley and refuses to spin properly. I'm genuinely baffled at how some random curved wire could end up inside a washing machine. Needless to say, anyone know how much those manual labour magicians charges these days, preferably the not so attractive ones as I want to avoid the village thinking I'm starring in a porno. | |

Had a guy in Bury come to my house on a Sunday afternoon a couple of years back, fixed a part and got it working and he only wanted £40. He was mad as a box of frogs and spent more time talking to me about his amateur dramatics than he did fixing the machine, but I thought it was ludicrously cheap. I gave him £60.

Other than that you're looking at about £100-£150 for callout and wire removal I reckon...cheaper than a new washing machine though! Edit - get Clive's guy in! [Post edited 29 May 15:27]

I'm not actually local at the moment. I'm out and about campaigning for the alfresco gig, so the poor washing machine has decided to pick its moment (typically short-sightedness from household appliances). £40 sounds like an absolute bargain though, especially on a Sunday. The fact you gave him £60 says a lot about both of you. If I can get mine fixed anywhere near that sort of money I'll be delighted. The timing isn't ideal as the wife has taken a keen interest in clothes shopping. Funny how these things happen.

Not sure how often your appliances breakdown but I would recommend taking out cover with a supplier (we use Scottish Gas). We make a monthly payment and they come out and fix everything from washing machine, boiler, tumble dryer, dishwasher etc. And if they can't fix it they give you a replacement. As for a call out charge with no cover, I paid £65 for a company to look at an industrial dishwasher at my business. So I would imagine it won't be much difference for a household call.

How much does that cover cost a year though? I suspect it will only cover fairly new boilers etc.

Had it a couple times now. The underwire from one of the ladies of the houses bras has come out. They pop them in a mesh bag before washing now, saves a bit of trouble.
