Has the above been discussed on here yet and what do we think of them ?

Most important one for me , a foul can now be given B4 the ball is in play at a set peice. Corner ect .

Judging by what goes on before a corner is taken, I'd say initially, everyone is screwed, but slightly longer term it could be the solution or as close to one as you'll probably get. Players will very soon learn, that's for sure. 10 penalties every match anyone?

I like the intent. I worry that we’re going to see a lot of simulation, and VAR interventions.

Being brought in for the World Cup isn't it?

Going to massively favour attackers because, if they foul it's a free kick and a wasted set play; if the defender fouls it's a penalty! Going to be fun to see how it plays out and how long they will give 3+ penalties in a match for. Can guarantee it won't last in domestic football.

Full list of VAR changes as explained bybSkybSoorts

VAR (video assistant referee) changes

In an effort to clamp down on grappling before corners and free kicks, the VAR will be able to intervene if an attacker commits a foul before the ball is in play.

If an offence is identified that has a direct impact on a goal or penalty kick, referees will be sent to the on-field monitor for the final say.

They could then take disciplinary action, such as issuing a card, as well as ordering the set piece to be retaken.

VAR checks on awarding corners will only be used to correct obvious errors - but must not delay the restart of play.

Officials will also only intervene for incorrectly-awarded second yellow cards and will not recommend a second booking where one was not originally shown on the pitch.

If I’m reading that right if a corner is incorrectly given and it is a clear and obvious error the ref is invited to review on screen. But if a goal kick is wrongly awarded VAR doesn’t tell involved.

Poll: Dickhead "Noun" a stupid, irritating, or ridiculous man.

It's all a little lacking in clarity but I would suggest that is right.

It also suggests the VAR involvement before set pieces is over issuing cards or having them retaken rather than awarding penalties/free kicks (which I understand can only be awarded when the ball is in play). So, less of a change in rules than I had though in my comment above.

Won't it just be ridiculously biased in favour of the strikers? I mean they commit a foul and they have wasted a corner. If the defender commits a foul, it's a penalty. (If that's the plan, I haven't actually read the rule change.)

As above, I think it is less of a rule change and more of a change to VAR involvement. The suggestion is that grappling before the ball is in play that is deemed to have affected the outcome after the ball is in play can lead to issuing a card (already possible when the ball isn't in play) or a retaken set piece (also already possible under the rules). It does give VAR the chance to rule out more goals and penalties.

Whilst I think all of us would welcome it stopping the grappling, I think most (if not all of us) do not look forward to its interpretation and application through VAR. Just get the referees to stamp down on it happening and to issue yellow cards where it is!

As ever, the size of the change and its implications on the game depends very much on its interpretation and application. It will be interesting to see how much impact they do have.

But I do make you right, they have the potential to make a massive difference.

Trouble is it happens in every single game, and every single corner. It may be implemented the first couple of games, but doubt it’ll last. Could well be 10 penalties a game

Whatever changes people will complain, like how they complained before VAR when referees made (subjectively) incorrect decisions and demanded some sort of video redress to sort out the errors (subjectively)

The genie is out of the bottle - you can keep trying to stuff it back in but the seal has been broken and it aint going back!

That one makes a lot of sense tbh. I never understood why the ref couldn’t blow for an infraction in the build up. If they know just blow on the very first infringement these scrums will soon become a thing of the past.

I’d like to see a time limit brought in for the taking of throw ins. Way too much time gets wasted on this imho.

This is exactly the point. Fans, media pundits, players and managers all complain about inconsistency, but complete consistency simply is not achievable.

Referees are making decisions in real time and under pressure. Even with VAR, where officials can take several minutes and review an incident from multiple angles, there can still be a range of legitimate interpretations.

Until expectations are adjusted to reflect that reality, this issue will never go away.

I think it would be better for players involved in the grappling to be sent out of the area initially and then if it continues then booked. It would allow play to continue and stop the intervention.
