| Chances of SM access and FoM in next five years? 08:49 - Jun 5 with 1497 views | ThisIsMyUsername | Good morning all. Please can someone have a look in their crystal ball and let me know how likely it is that we in the UK will be able to enjoy freedom of movement within the EU again in the next five years? I am at a real crossroad in my life, being in my mid-30s and longing for what was taken away following the 2016 vote. I always saw myself living in Europe one day. Of course should Reform get elected at the next GE we can kiss goodbye to any hopes, so I am thinking it might not be a bad idea to seriously try to future proof things for myself, via pursuing moves to one of a number of EU countries which present routes to citizenship (applications) after time frames ranging between five and 10 years. I would love to know how likely is it that Labour commit and campaign on all of this going to into the next GE. Obviously no one on here can seriously answer this question. It seems like they are doing what they can at present to shift the narrative in this direction. In my (uninformed) opinion (hope), they will go further in the build up to the next GE, seeing it as a way to mobilise millions of younger people to the polling stations. Bit of a ramble but very interested in people's opinions on where the future may lay for us all. [Post edited 5 Jun 8:59]

Even if Reform and/or the Tories don't win the next election, so long as Farage is about, he and the right wing parties and media would do all they could to prevent it, and as we saw in 2016 they can be very effective. No, sadly not. I am not one of the lucky 10% who have Irish parents/grandparents.

Waiting for politics, hoping one lot gets in with a policy or one lot doesn't get in is a waste of time. Brexit has changed one type of movement, not all. Go for it! There are always trade offs and policy has to be set for the whole population meaning it might be watered down compared with your precise needs, or not happen at all. Sections of society have different levels of geographical mobility. Whether that be super-rich, fewer family ties, trade or profession, language skills etc. Altogether, a more privileged group as some may say (rightly or wrongly). Moving towards such a policy would undoubtedly mobilise those less privileged (or less able) to complain, for one reason because FoM is two-way. For that reason, politicians would think twice. Hence my advice to recognise the agency that you clearly have and work towards your goal.

Thank you for your thoughts. I think I have to agree that being proactive and controlling what is controllable is probably the best option.

That is the case for all nationalities moving to the Emerald Isle. "There are 5 different ways you can apply for Irish citizenship by naturalisation, You are an adult that has lived legally in the Republic of Ireland and meet the 5 years reckonable residence requirement You are married to – or in a civil partnership with – an Irish citizen for 3 years, lived legally on the island of Ireland and meet the 3 years residency requirement You have are of Irish descent or Irish associations You are applying on behalf of a minor (child) You were declared a refugee or Stateless person" 2 of my best mates who moved to the US got married had families are planning on moving back to Ireland, one of them in the next 3 months! The challenge is finding somewhere to live...

They'll have to be moving back in with the parents I worked with a machine driver last month who was doing his first days work in Ireland after 22 years living in New York. Had just moved back to Ballinamore.. Which I'm told is a lot like New York

My wife and I moved here in Spain in our 30's/ 40's and it's the best thing we've ever done. Depending on your Occupation there's still options available to you, here there's the digital nomad visa and the freelancer visa, which is actually what I'm helping my friend in his 30's to obtain now. You being proactive is going to be a safer option than relying on a change of legislation Good luck

Thank you. Just a heads up - you'll have a flashy red in the top right corner from me.

I've made a start at least. I'd be totally amazed if Reform won the next GE, I think it's more likely you'll see pink Elephants flying overhead. There are plenty of gullible folk in the UK, but not that many, I sincerely hope. I wish I had the courage of my convictions and got out many years ago, but life tends to get in the way.

Ahem, West Riding 'Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, Barnsley is located on the M1 corridor between the cities of Sheffield to the south and Wakefield to the north' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ You might have the musical legacy of the Human League and Heaven 17 in the south but, honestly, the culture of the Sculpture Park and the open landscape of Ilkley Moor make the west a better place for freedom of movement.
