| World Cup 09:26 - Jun 5 with 745 views | cressi | Could this world cup be different, could their be a surprise with Holland losing to Algeria, Ivory Coast beating France and Spain drawing with Iraq agreed all using their squads But could the heat and humidity be a major factor in the tournament. This has been debated since Roger Milla danced around the corner flag and before. | | | | |

While some of the lesser footballing nations are improving, I can't see a world where anyone other than the usual suspects wins it. Such is my confidence, I've got a bet on Germany, Brazil, England, Spain and France to all reach the 1/4's. Unlikely for there not to be at least 1 casualty among that 5, especially if a last 16 game matches 2 up (not sure how feasible that is) but at 110/1 I thought it worth a nibble.

Got a couple of World Cup ‘play dates’ with an old work colleague, the first of which is a week Monday when one of the games is Belgium v Egypt and I just fancy the pyramidites to sneak that.

It’s incredibly unlikely because of the draw. You’d need all five teams to go into separate third round matches, of which there are only eight. If all those teams win their groups, Germany will play France in the third round so only one will make it through to the quarter finals. Even if one of those two teams finishes second (and only one, as their groups’ runners up meet in the second round), they’ll play the winner of Brazil’s group in the third round, so only one goes through. Finishing third could put them in many places, but potentially against England. But if England finish second and open that route, we’ll play the winner of Spain’s group in the third round.

Certainly unlikely, not least as you say because of the draws. I did loosely map a path to it happening but its that Germany v France last 16 potential that made me nervous, if they both win their group that would be the path. I did have another one excluding Germany, just the other 4 who if they win their groups wouldn't meet before the 1/4s. Only 13/1 though. [Post edited 5 Jun 11:33]

England into the quarters where they most likely meet Brazil, get through that and I still see us going out in the semis.

I'm just working through that one myself, to see how it could pan out. As you say, big-hitters facing each other in the R32 or the R16. It's so complex these days, you need a digital wallchart to plot it all out!

So... Assuming the groups resolve themselves according to seedings, Germany would play France in any potential R16 match, so that bet would fail unless one of those two comes second in their group. If Germany finish second, chances are they'd play Brazil in the R16. Ditto if France finish second. I wonder if there are any permutations that would result in all of those getting through to the QF? Another noteworthy result - if USA and Iran finish second in their groups, they'll face off against each other in the R32.
