A reminder to those throwing stats around: 12:43 - Jun 21 with 1303 viewsMarshalls_Mullet

Based on managers who have managed more than 25 matches in the Premier League, statistically KM has the worst win % in the entire history of the league.

I say this in the knowledge that KM is one of our best ever managers, and he did a great job for us on and off the pitch.

My reason for pointing this out? Don't judge a manager based on stats alone. Give Gary O'Neil a chance, and get behind him.

P.S. Vincent Kompany didn't fare too well either.

Added to that observation, all the stats being thrown around are 'team' stats'. Of course the manager is part of that team, but there are no 'manager' metrics, unlike individual player metrics - the stats being quoted it is a nuanced blend of many contributing factors.

The metrics that will matter is what O'Neil achieves with the squad he starts next season with at Town.

though the squad he has at the start of the season, may be substantially different to the one he has on august 31st unless ashton does his job quicker this time!

The last paragraph nails it. Doesn't matter what KM did/didn't do or Kompany etc, it matters what GON does next season.

If we’re not basing the appointment on data and stats and past performance then what is it based on though? Gut?

Those complaining about set piece goals conceded by O’ Neil teams, we conceded 82 goals under McKenna in our last PL season, period. I have nothing but gratitude for the job McKenna did but it’s hardly like appointing O’ Neil will make us any less defensively solid.

I hope so, but if only it was that simple.

There will be a very careful balancing act between getting a player in early, but he's ok rather than great vs waiting longer to get an outstanding signing. It will also be dependent on who we can move on, of course.

Pragmatic is applicable in so many situations for next season, and that also applies to recruitment. Get some signings in for key positions that are 'good enough' rather than hold out to get an outstanding signing that we may miss out on. Overseas signing may happen quicker for players who want their PL opportunity secured, but will also come with higher risk.

If we do go with pragmatic signing though, there is a risk that some fans are going to cry 'lack of ambition'.

In an ideal world we have the core of the team in place for preseason, but a fear that is hoping for too much.

Stats and data are nothing without context.
