I still can’t believe that we actually spend money on players yet alone spend tens of millions on a single player. When I hear a story about an average championship striker being released from their club, a tiny bit of me still expects that player to be our marquee signing.

I have no sympathy whatsoever for Marcus Evans but I do wonder whether he regularly reflects on his time here and whether he thinks that he was appallingly bad here - I think he probably does on both points.

People were moaning last summer and I was thinking 'we've just spent 8 million or whatever it was on an ex Ajax midfielder'...

I don't think Marcus Evans probably reflects on us at all.

He bought us for cheap with the intention of spending a few quid to get us promoted and selling us on at a profit as soon as he could. He failed, and was lumbered with us, using us as an income offset for his group instead of having to give money to HMRC.

We were purely a business decision. Yes he failed, but I believe he has no sentiment towards the club. He wasn't even an Ipswich fan (he supported Chelsea).

Simply proves how quickly football can change - not that long ago, Brentford were in L2 but now their main striker started a WC match for Brazil. Madness. And if a club gets it wrong then they can plummet - Leicester and Leeds being good examples of getting it wrong but obviously Leeds have turned things around.

Just a few seasons ago, Ross McCormack would’ve been a luxury signing.

Now if Evans was still here, we would be all over a player like Jonathan Panzo (who was released from Brum).

You could well be right but I imagine that a lot of business people take their failures badly - but maybe he can simply just write it off.

Saw a post saying that this Brazil team wouldn’t have even made their Olympic squad of 20 years ago.
Growing up on some of the most iconic names in football with those Brazil sides.. they’ve had a significant drop off since the mid 2000s. Starting centre forward playing for Brentford and Number 10 for (recently relegated) West Ham probably highlights that the best.

Still a decent side, with decent players.. but no world class stars or real household names anymore

Brazil are not as good as some of their previous teams but they certainly do have household names. Vinícius Júnior, Neymar, Alisson Becker, Casemiro and Raphinha bring good examples of this.

We got seriously 'lucky' with Gamechanger and McKenns coming together as a perfect (good) storm. We really need to capitalise and consolidate for a few seasons.

Agreed. Nobody in business intends to make a loss. Period. The notion Evans was intentionally "offsetting" is ignorant of the percentages involved. It might have reduced his tax bill, but this is dwarfed by the payoff to him if we were successful and in profit.

His timing was unfortunate, shortly after (and i cant recall who it was) there was a landscape changing transfer, thereafter prices went up and his pockets weren't as deep as they had looked (i guess they were but what he was prepared to spend wasnt)
