Is it going to be another summer of links with unrealistic signings? 13:59 - Jun 29 with 3619 viewsDubtractor

Followed by signing players significantly less impressive?

Last time we came up we seemed to be linked with any number of good players, before ultimately ending up with a squad nowhere near the level needed.

A few links already this summer seem a bit improbable in the scheme of things, Lloyd Kelly and the Brazilian lad being prime examples, and I wonder if we'll see the same thing play out again. Hopefully not!

It's obviously good to aim high for player signings, but equally we need to be realistic.

Newcastle away when we got pumped 3-0 and he stood on the spot pointing . Those Were The Days

I've never been a fan of poking fun at our own players, but that video was something else, and the fact the Newcastle fans had clocked his 'movement' sufficiently to decide to record it spoke volumes.

I have never seen that video, I was up in the gods and remember it fondly. He was pretty good at Brentford was it, decent career.

I don't see either of those as improbable ( in the scheme of things or otherwise ). Serie A is in the doldrums, check the performance of Italian teams in Europe this past season, not to mention the absence ( again ) of the national team at a major competition. Alexsandro is playing in a league that is well below PL standard overall, and if you remove PSG from the equation it's even worse. Yes the likes of them need to want to come here, and we need to negotiate a price agreeable to all parties. So I see them as something that needs working on for sure, but improbable? No.

I do agree that we can't let the same thing happen as last time. You'd think, once bitten........!

I think my point (if you can call it that) isn't that the players wouldn't come to us, if we were the only option on the table, more that there will inevitably be better offers available to them.

Well, quite. I imagine we’re looking in a field in which at least 10 other Prem clubs would be interested. Ultimately it’ll come down to how best we can pitch to them players, and how much we pay them.

It’s a tough balancing act as I wish the club was better ‘prepared’ in the sense of several
£5-£10m signings which will not only improve us straight away, but will double, if not triple in price in 2-3 years time. Ultimately we don’t have ‘time’ for that though, with the immediate aim of staying up.

€30m for a centre half suggests to me we’re ready to go fairly big this summer (although I suspect €5m of that is the fact that he’s a one time Brazilian capped player).

As much as people might not like it, a lot of it comes down to links to/relationships with agents too. They have a big influence on players and will always guide players towards moves that are best for their agency and will try to funnel their players to the managers they have on their books too where they can.
