| I dont think Thomas Tuchel is any tactical genius 07:07 - Jul 1 with 2090 views | muccletonjoe | Far from it. His motivational skills are yet to be certified and will be called into question tonight. All very well saying the low block is difficult to break down , but you have to balance that with the ability which is available to him within the squad. His job is to deploy those skills to give us the best opportunity of winning. To date , I have to say he has fallen short of that and it has been left to Bellingham and Kane on the pitch and the supporters off the pitch to guide the team through to this knock out match with Congo. Needless to say another failure tonight runs the risk of being dumped out of the competition by a country with a fraction of our resources and player pool, and will very likely be His last game in charge. Over to you Mr Tuchel ! | | | | |

They went unbeaten. They didn't "have" to go unbeaten. They were 17 points clear of second and 18 clear of Bayern.

Safe to say that people with far more knowledge and experience with football at domestic, continental and international level seem to think it does mean something - else we would all be coaches and managers. |
Well if they have more knowledge , how come we havent won it since 1966? . IMO its because we have constantly appointed managers who select the best players , regardless whether they make the best team or not. As Ramsey said when he became England manager " I select players to fit into my system, not necessarily the best players but the best team " . A fundamental which has eluded everyone, with the possible exception of Robson, ever since.

Croatia had a lot of good signs. Ghana I can look past due to their very effective block but Panama worried me as they didn't sit back too much yet we did not look good. Our defence does worry me a bit too, have looked open too often. I'm hoping that when we meet an attacking team we'll do OK. |
He did win the league with Bayern.

I agree , most teams do ride their luck somewhere along the way to winning a cup, we did in '81.

True. He also failed to in his second season. He had early success with Chelsea too. Maybe this, being his first World Cup, means we're destined to win it!

True - but the only time the league was not won by Bayern was the one time the team who did win were lauded as one the best in Europe that season. Was well documented that Tuchel was left as a bit of a lame duck by the board after he publicly criticised them over their transfer dealings - they then announced he was leaving in Feb, which further weakened his position. Most were always surprised that Tuchel was appointed as he seemed quite a non Bayern type hire (he's very outspoken, the board does not like that). Was a bit of a panic hire after Nagelsmann left, which the board admitted was a mistake later. I don't think any of the above diminshes Tuchels football and tactical ability, more about his communication and management style - he likes more control and freedom - hence his challenges with the boards at Chelsea and Bayern.
