The Egyptian who carried the ball , down the right flank into the Argentina half momentarily lost control of the ball but then regained it. Wouldn’t that start a new phase in which case VAR were out of order going back to the earlier foul. |  |

Considering in the PL you can practically rip someone's shirt off and slam dunk them into the ground, and get away with it, I'd say the laws of the game need to be exactly the same everywhere it's played. |

That seems rather melodramatic. The Argie player was dispossessed by an opponent stamping on his foot. It’s not the worst foul you’ll ever see, but it is a foul. Shame though as it was a cracking move after that. But this is exactly why we need VAR and it/they/him worked perfectly. |  |

It wasn't the shirt tug it was the foul on his foot. He quite clearly trod on him.
I was absolutely gutted a d felt annoyed about it. But it was the right decision. They can't not give a clear foul just because it was a brilliant goal (unless Trump makes a call). [Post edited 7 Jul 22:05]

It's a contact sport, and exactly the type of foul (very light contact followed by swallow dive) that they've been waving away all tournament, much to the benefit of the games.
It was also at the other end of the pitch from the goal, the absolute worst use of VAR. Possibly the worst I've seen. | | | |

I do get a bit tired of ex-professionals chanting out "not enough in it for me". Nowhere in the rules does it grade sthe severity of a shove nor the time limit for shirt pulling before they qualify as fouls. | |

In real time 99% wouldn’t give it, slow motion and 99% would.
The replays should be in real time only, like the game is, because football IS a contact sport and physical, and in slow motion, e writhing looks a foul.
The still footage and slow motions make every contact look a probable foul.
But yeah. If we can’t be sensible just get rid of it and give fans the game back, mistakes happen, but we want the enjoyment of the moment back, the supporters at a game have been lost in this obsession with controlling outcomes. | | | |

I know people want the underdog to win but Egypt were not done out of anything by anyone other than themselves seeing as they scored anyway and still went on to chuck a 2-0 lead away in about 15 minutes. |  |

We haven't seen any other goals disallowed in similar circumstances in this tournament, despite some much clearer fouls in the build up to goals (Argentina v Austria being the best example). So that definitely isn't how the rules have been applied consistently.

The refereeing has been poor and appears to favour the teams who guarantee bigger crowds as in this Egyptian game. The pricing of games is scandalous with the stadium costs and transport. Argentina's third was similar starting with a foul. VAR will definitely damage any advantages that Town get next season. | |

The distance the foul was from the goal has no bearing on whether it should be disallowed or not. It allowed a direct turnover of possession which culminated in Egypt scoring. Yeah you can argue there's not always consistency in what gets adjudged to be a foul or not but there never was and never will be, and it was daft from the powers that be to think VAR would change that.
While 'letting things play' is generally seen as good for the flow of the match, the problem comes when VAR forces officials to look at incidents in more detail which naturally means a slightly different or more robust version of refereeing to how they've handled the rest of the game. An annoying issue of VAR's own creation and another reason why it should be scrapped in its entirety. | |
