My Grandfather worked in the mill at Dedham and sometimes a mill in Manningtree,he’d bike along the river to work and back again.He was also the choir master at Dedham Church. | |

I think that would be John Charles Phillip Constable, great grandson of the famous painter, although I don't remember him from Northgate but I was at an Ipswich Art School disco where he was pointed out to me.

Same. I suspect these places were a right of passage for anyone growing up in the area when families ‘went out for the day’ rather than headed to whatever manufactured experience now passes for entertainment.
I’ll add Snape Maltings and Sutton Hoo into the mix too, although that was slightly later on and where lucky girl friends during college years ended up visiting lol. Although we always finished the day off properly with a drink at somewhere like the Ramsholt Arms or the Ship at Levington (that used to be proper, tapped barrels behind the bar when I was a teenager). My old fella moved from the pits in the midlands to Suffolk to work for the council and was always on the road, so he seemed to know all the best corners and watering holes. |  |

Yes, the Ship at Levington is a good shout, and I would add to that the Butt and Oyster at Pin Mill. Indeed, I love the Orwell and Deben estuaries but have only sailed past the Ramsholt Arms. [Post edited 12 Jul 8:25]
