I have a feeling he is going to be a VERY good signing for us.

Young enough to still improve too.

RIP Sir Bobby

My (baseless) theory is that we're going to be like France!! on 15:20 - Jul 20 with 2156 viewsunstableblue

As in 3 or 4 outfield players who are going to be allowed to provide a threat push up, break, transition quickly, be free to attack - Fatawu has the ability for this, perhaps our new striker also, add in Jack Clarke, they can beat someone (Hutchinson struggled a bit with this in the Prem, preferred slower transition).

And we'll have 6 or 7 players sitting deeper, waiting to spring the transition.

Perhaps a back 5, two mids who can sit in front of them. Handle overloads.

I'm really happy with this signing, was hoping we'd be in for him. Think he is exactly what we need on the right. Quick, direct, very good on the counter and can finish.

Fatawu and McAteer can reunite their battle for the right side spot; and we have the experience of Burns.

I'm hoping Egeli can switch to the ten, behind a physical number 9

Big question is whether we will play with a central 10 this year. It could be more of an 8 in a 4-3-3 formation, or disappear entirely if we move to a 3-4-2-1 formation. Saying that, in attack that might look more like a 3-2-4-1 formation (almost the 3-2-5 formation we adopted during 23/24 in attack).

As people have stated O'Neil will have different tactics, views.

Yes he may be 4-2-3-1 previously, like Mckenna, but he may transition systems in game between defending and attack (McKenna tried this but not that successfully), home and away - he may change his philosophy this season given the challenge to survive.

itfcsuth below shows what a 5-2-3 could look like, but this removes the 10 role... and for me we need a playmaker in the prem and agree with you that should be perhaps be an 8

We're fishing in a very different pond this time aren't we. by itfcsuth 20 Jul 16:10
If we were to look at a back 3, not against that idea.

GK
O'Shea - Diop - LCB
RWB - Matusiwa - Morita - Davis
Fatawu - LAM
ST

Still need 6 PL level players, plus additional depth. We are bringing in the right level of player for me, but we still need more of it, still so much work to do - heading in the right direction if we can get these over the line.

I'd say it'll be either Matusiwa or Morita (assuming he signs) plus an 8 - more athletic and box to box. And the two players behind the striker will be dual 10's rather than wide players. Width provided by Davis and whoever plays down the right. Will be a direct touchline runner though not a player that wants to drift inside.

Yes Matusiwa and Morita are the holding mids. The 8 needs to drive the transition from defensive positions. And be able to have a game splitting pass in them.

When you start to consider this sort of change

You realise that players like Nunez, Egeli, etc.. may not have a natural place in the team next season
