Had to have my dog put to sleep today. 14:56 - Jul 21 with 2362 viewscbower

Black Lab. She was 15 years and one month old. Had her since she was 8 weeks old. Hardest thing I've ever had to do. Hope there is an endless bowl of food for her wherever her spirit is now. Going to take some getting over this one. RIP Hunke, you were my best friend old pal .

Sorry about your news.

Letting them go is so hard, but it is part of the kindness we show them as pack leader. They protect us, they show us unconditional love, the strength we have in our human/dog pack means we grow stronger together. But when they reach that point where they cannot go on, they need us to help them and make that decision for them.

It's the only question in their entire lives they ask of us, the rest of their lives was them giving to us.

She will be thanking you now and eating endless bones

That’s lovely.

commiserations. It will be when you walk in the door and the dog is not there to greet you. Hits you every time.

As already said that's a good age for a Lab, you did the right thing.

"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."

Sorry to hear this.

I never wanted a dog and the one we got is an absolute tool... But I wouldn't be without her.

Sorry to read that.

We never had or wanted a dog until one of my daughters brought a two month old Sprocker Spaniel into the home. Now at the age of 4 he is my constant companion. I can't imagine not having him and often think about the day he won't be here.

My deepest condolences for your loss. RIP Hunke.

Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.

So sorry. I did this just before Christmas, 16 year old Jack/chiuaua. Micro managed my life! Rescued at 2, took over the house, and I was the ‘no dogs Dad’, but dogs do strange things to men! So loved the ex came with me to the vet and we held hands on her as she went. I’ve been doing some dog sitting for friends since, it’s really helped. Might be worth a try? ‘Night in the pub? ‘, ‘you go, I’m staying in with the dog’. Bless em’.

Huge sympathies.

Our boy moved on over a year ago and there's still not a day that goes by where he doesn't enter my thoughts at one point.

Had to explain to my youngest that he has gone to heaven, where he'll be playing with all the other dogs right until the moment one of us joins him up there where he'll come running over to us for a big hug.

We said goodbye to our little rescue dog 2 weeks ago yesterday and it’s so quiet without him. It was the hardest thing to do, but we were both with him at the vets, him on my lap us both telling him what a good boy he was and that he was going to go to sleep.

I’m in bits again typing this now.

So sorry for your loss

So sorry to hear that. It's like losing one of the family, and only another dog owner can really understand the grief your dear dog's death brings.
I was in the same position a few years back. The way to help with the grief is to be thankful you had her for the time you did and the joy and happiness she brought you.

I think we are actually owned by them, not the other way round ...
