Streeting calling out Israel over Gaza 12:56 - Jul 22 with 765 viewsElderGrizzly

Criticism, albeit light, but it's a start

"I believe very strongly in Israel’s right to defend itself, to defend its values, its freedom, and its democracy, just as we do every single day.

But I also hold Israel, as a friend and ally, to the same standard that we hold ourselves to. That is the standard that should be applied to Israel. That is the standard that I think I feel they’ve fallen short of.

We’ve got a responsibility as a country to make sure that we’re good friends. We’re good friends who are also critical friends when necessary."

It's not much criticism of it, the political equivalent of "go stand in corner and think what you've done" whilst in reality they continue to kill people in quite large numbers during a cease-fire.

Ones right to defend themselves has never been the right to commit genocide.

100% agree. But until now, even the slightest of criticism has been frowned upon.

It's not even as harsh as that. More "I know he can be a d1ck sometimes, but he's one of my best mates."

Genocide?
A word used far too often and mostly used incorrectly.
If Israel wanted to wipe out all of the Palestinian race then they would easily be able to, militarily.

I believe Hamas has the dedicated aim of wiping Israel off the map - that would be genocide.

This isn't displaying support for either side, it is pointing out that inflammatory language does nothing to further any cause.

There is only one side wiping the other off the map in this conflict.

No surprises to see you pushing some weird equivalence here which you then try and caveat with your final paragraph.

It's literally been termed a genocide by international courts, I suggest you take it up with them if you have issues with the language.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

"The Gaza genocide is the ongoing,[19] intentional, and systematic destruction of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip carried out by Israel during the Gaza war. It encompasses mass killings, the targeted killing of children (who account for 30% of those killed),[20][21][22] deliberate starvation, infliction of serious bodily and mental harm, and prevention of births. Other acts include blockading, destroying civilian infrastructure, destroying healthcare facilities, killing healthcare workers and aid-seekers, causing mass forced displacement, committing sexual violence, and destroying educational, religious, and cultural sites.[23] The genocide has been recognised by a United Nations special committee[24] and commission of inquiry,[23] the International Association of Genocide Scholars,[25][26] multiple human rights groups,[c] state governments, numerous genocide studies and international law scholars,[32][33] and other experts."

Given this, "falling short" is very much an understatement.

The facts of the matter (ICC arrest warrants, UN investigation findings, etc.), sadly suggest otherwise.

Agree
Pathetic
Completely out of proportion with the genocide being carried out

Interesting to see one of our 'protect women and girls' posters(plus a couple of supporters) defending the mass murder of women and children by a rogue state with some feeble semantics here.

Well, I for one, am shocked to see deeply likeable Wesley Streeting offering the most feeble centrist take possible on something.
