The record is 20+ years old and was set during huge doping, surely it's a completely meaningless record especially as Pantani was implicated for EPO. The first assumed "clean" time in the records is apparently the 14th fastest. Beautiful scenery though. SB [Post edited 24 Jul 13:33]

Yep… 1995 to 2007 are the darkest days in the sport. Pantani’s record still stands though

Had a great ride there about 10 years ago, Alpe D'Huez followed by Col de la Croix de Fer and back to Le Bourg-d'Oisans. One of my favourite day's cycling - but get's crazy busy up and down the mountain after about 9am. Amazingly it's 40 years since Hinault and LeMond crossed together, although Hinault was awarded the stage.

I went in 2018. Tried to walk up it, didn’t get far lol The speed the Yellow Jersey train came past was absolutely ridiculous

The first few ramps are very steep and the first 4K is a 9% climb. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

But it's "only" about 12km - we then followed it with Col de la Croix De Fer which is over a 25km climb from Allemand. The descent from Froix de Fer was the quickest I have ever gone on a oad bike at just over 80KMh as it doesn't have the switchbacks that some of the other alp climbs have.

Loved it - cracking area. Did it same week the tour went up it twice for the 100 year anniversary. Great spectacle. Did the Telegraph/ Galibier same time which was brutal - worst I've ever felt after sport!
