Why oh why do the media and politicians just bang on and on about raising taxes 18:49 - Jul 27 with 1470 viewsLegendofthePhoenix

and that it can't be fair to make hard working people pay more in tax , blah, blah blah. Is this just a massive societal deflection tactic from the real issue?

The overwhelming issue around raising tax revenues isn't individuals is it? It's the multinational corporations who sell £billions in products and services in the UK, but don't pay their tax here.

Visit the Republic of Ireland and see how fabulous their infrastructure is. Because the big multinationals base themselves in the RoI and pay a lower rate than anywhere else in Europe, and no tax in any other European countries including the UK, even though we are not part of the EU.

Surely we just need a government that will call it out, call the bluff of the multinationals, and say that either they pay tax in the UK at the proper rates, or we just stop them trading. Google, Meta, Amazon, Starbucks the list is long, but these companies are doing untold damage to the UK and it must be time we stood up to it.

What am I missing here? It just seems so obvious.

Poll: would you rather

Yeah fine but let's also have a chat about rent controls, utility bills, transport costs and all the other stuff.

You can't just keep asking people to pay more tax.

High taxes work in places like the Nordics where you have SIGNIFICANTLY lower cost of housing and travel and utility bills which are broadly the in line with ours.

If you have high taxes, high cost of housing, high travel costs and high utility bills then what kind of economy are you expecting?

Totally agree, all those things need to be part of the discussion and need to be addressed.

Media and the Tycoons that own majority of media aka the millionaires/billionaires float the ideas to deflect away taxing the 0.1% and instead almost give a green light for extra tax on the working class as it acts as a forewarning and for government to see, oh well public know it might happen so lets just make it happen after all they were warned about it.

I have yet to see a front page headline of lets tax the multi billion pound empires/tycoons. if there has i apologise but don't recall it.

Its all smoke and mirrors between government and media as both use each other as platforms/gateways to the public

I have some sympathy with you on the 0.1% and media influence.

However - have you ever questioned why many other countries around the world have higher standards of living than us, better housing and better public services without a wealth/billionaire tax?

Yes, that was my point in my original remark.

It's not a "grown up conversation" we need about tax, it's everything.

And a personal bugbear of mine, I will never ever understand why there aren't rent controls in London.

EDIT: and also get rid of stamp duty for empty nesting boomers so they are at least incentivised to move out of their four bedroom homes.

The only way to definitively get these big companies to pay their fair share is to tax UK revenue / turnover rather than profits ie like VAT. You can’t escape VAT without breaking the law.

I think to answer your question you have to follow through the potential series of events that could follow. The companies might accept the tax if it was pitched at low level level (great, but would probably just lead to increased prices for all of us), or it would lead to these large companies withdrawing services from the UK. That would present opportunities for other companies to develop and take their place, but I that would take a long time. In the interim, how would our existing UK companies operate without Google, Amazon etc? Result:- failed companies, rising unemployment etc. Anyone who pretends to know what the scale of this would look like is lying. And fast forward to when those emerging companies do step up to take the place of the American companies (esp tech companies), maybe even say a nationalised company in amongst it, the levels of tax they would be paying, and the decades head start for the American companies would put future UK businesses at a major competitive disadvantage surely? Who would start a tech business in the UK for example if there was an inferior version of Amazon/Google in the present, and a far greater tax burden on the horizon if successful?

It’s a horrible problem, but I’m still not sure what the solution is, other than a universal agreement signed up to by all countries including the US.
