I got as far as “US President Donald Trump says”. Why news outlets continue to report what he says is beyond me. Maybe there’s progress, more likely not.

Hamas's disarming is meant to lead to Israel withdrawing from Gaza but there is no evidence that Israel wants to do this, and certainly not with an election in the offing.

Altho now Hamas sources are saying they have agreed to the proposal, with an official announcement 'to come later'.

The sticking point is likely to be Israel, who have said nothing so far, other than than one of the usual suspects (Ben Gvir) suggesting that killing/forced emigration is the only solution they'll accept and a Likud member insisting that Hamas must fully disarm before they do anything.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Why would anybody believe Hamas wants to disarm?

New leadership, political reality. Disarming to get the USA pressuring Israel to withdraw is about their only hope of survival currently. Not to mention making things difficult for Netanyahu in the run-up to an election.

They're not going to win militarily, anyway. It's most likely that Israel will be forced into blatantly scuppering the deal, thereby losing international support. So what is there to lose?

Why would anyone believe Israel would uphold any agreements they come to if they did disarm?

It matters little what Hamas do. There's no way Israel will withdraw from Gaza regardless.

They shouldn't. If my government was facing an existential threat on it's border I'd be very hopeful they would defend us.

So if they make an agreement they shouldn't adhere to it?

Hard to know what to say to that really.

Imagine if the RAF had been beaten in 1940.

Imagine if the Germans had invaded.

Imagine if the only parts of Britain we could even vaguely call our own now were a small part of Cornwall and a few scattered areas on Humberside.

Imagine if, even then, the Luftwaffe and the Wehrmacht were reducing the first to rubble, and taking even more bits of the second for themselves.

Imagine not fighting.

Eighty years.

Only one side of that conflict is facing an existential threat. Only one side is being wiped off the map. Only one side is being slaughtered whilst the rest of the world looks the other way.

Are you trying to imply there is some equivalence between those attacks and the ongoing and internationally recognised genocide in Gaza?

It had been happening for 75 years prior to October 7th.

I'll make it easy for you. Acts of terrorism are not nice. But acts of genocide are even less nice.

Very patronising.

So the 7th wasn't genocidal?

I guess you don't need to answer my question now, you clearly are trying to construct an equivalence between a horrible terrorist attack and a 2 year genocidal campaign that has cost 80,000 lives and has flattened huge areas of Gaza making them uninhabitable at this time.

I've got words for that but none of them are polite.

I wouldn't seek equivalence at all, it's not the way it works. Just some recognition of the threat faced by those living in Israel.

Sorry coming back to your question, no. Not equivalence. Just that the war would not have happened without that attack which was in my view genocidal and restricted only by Hamas' limited capability.

The Palestinians of Gaza would have continued to live under occupation in what is essentially an open air prison regardless of whether or not October 7th had happened.
