Thanks for explaining that. I still think the weight appears excessive. My son suggested that heavy helps with stability which makes some sense. I guess the lenses require a certain amount of weight as well as size. Also, if the lens is heavy, it will want a certain amount of weight further back to help with balance. However, in my mind that could be achieved with less weight behind the operator moving the point of balance closer to the person's own centre of gravity. |  |

They need incredibly high magnification - x80 to x125 is not unusual in sporting events. That requires numerous lens elements (10-20 or more individual high grade optical glass lenses would not be unusual), all on a high precision mechanical shuttle that moves the elements forwards and backward for precision zoom and focus. The glass lenses also need to be very large too for low light performance. You still can't beat large glass surfaces for collecting as much light as possible. Modern high gain camera CCDs plus image processing helps, but still introduces more grain than just relying on area of available glass. All of this leads to large, and very heavy lenses. I've mounted a few of these so can speak from personal experience. |  | |  |

There is no substitute for letting the lens do the work. That means a long lens with a big diameter, to handle telephoto zoom requirements and low light conditions. The camera man also needs to watch a screen rather than use a viewfinder. Which puts everything in front of him. |  | |  |
