Au contraire, a bright young prospect who is U21 and therefore doesn't count towards the squad limit is entirely something we can afford to do this season. Grabs us a few brilliant late goals coming off the bench, could be very valuable points gained. It's what Emersonn is, to a degree. Neither of which, I believe, are going to be our primary starting striker.

Of the promoted clubs last season, only Sunderland made use of it and that was for two weeks with Marc Guiu. The only thing we could do is a loan with an option to buy for a player who might be in a bomb squad type situation.

I believe all loans count towards squad limit regardless of age. If we loan in someone aged 18 or 38 they count.. Only permanently contracted players can be exempt of the squad rules due to age… Similar to Egeli this season. I could of course be completely wrong [Post edited 9 Aug 22:35]

From what I understand that is an efl rule and under the terms of the epl rule set u21 loans are squad exempt. There are limits on the number of players you can take from other prem clubs though.

That is an EFL rule. It was true in the Championship last season, but in the PL no U21s count towards the squad numbers, loan or permanent. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I also thought that until I was corrected a few days ago.

| We can still have 2 Premier League loans on 08:45 - Aug 10 with 397 views | SuffolkPunchFC | For the people confused about the rules relating to the squad of 25, and whether or not U21s count towards the 25, this is a Championship specific rule that was indeed the case for us last season but not now. There is no equivalent rule in the PL. 44.9.2 The following Players do not need to be included in the Squad List to be eligible to play in League matches: (a) in respect of Championship Clubs, any Under 21 Player (save for any Under 21 Player who is registered with the Club on a Temporary Loan Transfer); and (b) in respect of League One Clubs and League Two Clubs: (i) any Under 21 Players; and (ii) goalkeepers. Guidance Clubs are required to declare whether or not a Player is a goalkeeper when submitting a registration application. Inaccurately declaring an outfield Player as a goalkeeper will constitute misconduct as a breach of the Club’s obligation to behave towards League with the upmost good faith (as per Regulation 3.4 ). Under 21 Players who are on Loan to Championship Clubs are counted towards the 25 Player limit for the purpose of the Squad List Regulation. | | | |
