| Bezos rumoured to be buying big stake in Liverpool 14:54 - Aug 10 with 1184 views | jasondozzell | As much as the yanks have saved us and delivered good times, the creeping Americanisation of football is a real worry. The entire sporting culture is under threat. These oligarchs and corporations are hoovering up every asset you ever cared about because of the greed of late stage capitalism. Someone needs to save football so we can actually get back to a place where a smaller team could win the league. [Post edited 10 Aug 14:57]

Every time there has been any Americanised threat be that the super league or sale of the World Cup, the global game has responded in such a serious way that those plans have been totally killed. The large majority of proper American MLS fans/ pundits are also now starting to flag that promotion/ relegation is required for them to continue to grow their game. Regarding a 'smaller team' winning the league, the competitive balance has already gone too far. You either have a system like today where the biggest teams stay at the top through commercial success, or those with the richest owners win the league. I don't mind it. If Ipswich continue to grow sustainably, they could be competing at the top of the league like Villa over the next 10 years. That to me feels sensible.

I'm well aware of that! The point I'm making is that figures like Bezos getting involved is not good news. It's another tier up. How long before Musk owns a team?

We've just sat through a world cup with hydration breaks for TV ads and an extended half time in the FINAL for a TV show. How's that for sporting culture? It's only going one way. Villa and ourselves will never win the league in the current situation. That's terrible. Game needs to be reformed.
| Bezos rumoured to be buying big stake in Liverpool on 16:38 - Aug 10 with 649 views | bsw72 | Leicester was a freak anomaly, the game has been financially dominated by bigger clubs since the PL came into being, even Blackburn outmuscled other teams when they won it. Nationality of ownership is irrelevant, American owners won’t lead to American influence as the money comes from broadcast revenue which is driven more out of Europe and Asia rather than North America. Also don’t confuse what happened in the World Cup with how the Premier League operates, as we have to fall within remit to UEFA as a governing body rather than FIFA else lose access to the Champions League and the revenue it brings in. | | | |

It was in America! I don't know how familiar you are with American sporting culture, but that is their sporting culture. Why would you not leverage the host nation to make money? I'd be very concerned if that was going on in Europe, but I can see why they made commercial decisions around the nation that was hosting the tournament. We could win the league, it would just take years of doing the right things consistently. There is no reform that would suddenly swing the doors open because in doing that the likes of Newcastle/ City would just dominate.

Unless he starts making them play in this, I'm not sure what he can do to affect us, or football more broadly. I'm afraid it's too late to stop all this stuff, the chance was 1993, but everyone saw the money then.

You're right but this is going to another level now. You're going to see the sport entirely remade.

'Why would you not leverage the host nation to make money?' is probably the sentence that sums it all up. That's the Infantino view of course. And the modern day society view. But it's not always been that way. Yes, organisations will seek to make money but FIFA exists only to do so these days We need a wage cap across the game, stricter rules around player ownership and stockpiling and fairer distribution of the TV deal.

No, we aren't. Attempts to remake the sport have already been kicked into the long grass following fan and club reactions.

| Bezos rumoured to be buying big stake in Liverpool on 17:40 - Aug 10 with 368 views | Radlett_blue | Football has now become such a big business that it should be no surprise that it behaves like one. And it's not just football - most popular professional sports have become slaves to the dollar. Any everyone involved in these sports is getting richer. Once the PL letting foreign owners, it hasn't really mattered whether they are American or Chinese billionaires. And if we'd kept foreign owners out, we'd have had Man U winning the league in 13 of the last 14 seasons, as Bayern Munich have done in the Bundesliga. | |

Fair points but I think the American sports model thing is particularly worrying. They think concerts and matches are big one off events that people should pay top dollar for for a once or twice a year experience. Season ticket holders, away supporters etc are a bit of an anathema to them. Music has already begun to fall. Going to a gig now often means spending upwards of 300 quid plus to go to Wembley. Everything is optimised. I can see football going the same way.

They're not stupid though, they are businesspeople and understand the local market and fans more than you might expect. The Super League rebuttal and latest FIFA attempts will be a good case study in what overstepping the line can bring. Just as an example, Bill Foley the Bournemouth has pushed back against regular season games in the USA - he's American. For clubs like ours, it will of course continue to offer a greater variety of corporate and hospitality options as our profile and hopefully fanbase expands, but it isn't viable to have a ridiculously expensive top 6 priced season tickets in Suffolk. You can't just implement an American pricing model in the UK for clubs the size of ITFC, increases should be expected though, last time in the PL we were easily the cheapest ticket by some distance.

It's already gone the same way but, as you say, also look at ticket prices for popular concerts & other sporting events. It's not just a football issue.

You have missed the key difference between American professional sports fans sports and what we have in England; it isn’t “one-off event culture vs season ticket culture,” it’s closed-league franchise economics (US) vs open-pyramid, promotion-relegation economics (England). This subsequently leads to the draft system and a better balance between teams and how they build their squads. In the US majority of season tickets are attached to PSLs which can be handed down through families pretty much in perpetuity, as generally you are guaranteed to watch top flight sport at your team, and will only lose out if you don’t renew or the franchise is sold on. It is also worth highlighting that because of the finances involved in the US, the controls around franchise ownership are far tighter than the controls in England around club ownership - and that is one of the main attractions for US investment currently.
